The economic picture continues to look unstable, many retailers have closed up shop as consumers hunt for quality investment pieces at reduced prices.

Shoppers at all income levels, including the affluent, are shifting from the shop ‘til you drop shopaholic mentality to investing in long-established high-end goods … and they’re willing to wait for these items to go on sale. This is what I call the Savvy Luxe Shopper.

There is an explosion in the number of retailers who are addressing this demand for luxe bargains. Many are offering discounts and incentives for the first time. Tiffany’s has reduced its prices. Kate Spade has hosted “Private Sales” which are announced to its email subscribers. Barney's, known for its warehouse sale have added online Final Sales.

The trend is not limited to just the standard designer clothing and accessories either. Home accessories, sports equipment, electronics & technology, and travel items are selling just as well.

The old standard of 25-35% doesn't work as well today either. The sales with the best results often reduce the pricing to at least 50% off regular prices to really catch the savvy shopper's eye.

As a result, retailers are getting more competitive. If you watch the sales headlines, you'll see a decided trend of rotating clearance sales. One retailer will host a sale with deep discounts. Then within one day, you'll see other sites offering the same percentage off in their sale. They might even try "trumping" the first retailer's sale with free shipping on any purchase (I like to call it retailers' poker).

Online sample sale sites are fast becoming a booming business in the US and abroad. The number of US and European sample/private sale sites (there were half as many sites just a year ago) keeps growing. However, they too must compete to keep the interest of the Savvy Luxe Shopper.
