In recent years, the internet has seen an astounding surge in online shopping. This is due to more people realizing the convenience of purchasing online and deals available at online retail stores. More people are now moving from traditional ‘brick and mortar’ stores to shopping at online retailers. There are literally millions of items now available online. Below is a summary of the most common products sold online.

According to all-rankings.com, the following is a list of the top 10 most purchased products online:
1. Travel Tickets: 54%
2. Holidays: 42%
3. Books: 40%
4. Concert/Theatre/Festival tickets: 38%
5. Clothes: 33%
6. Electrical Goods: 33%
7. CDs: 23%
8. Cinema tickets: 23%
9. DVDs: 21%
10. Music Downloads: 19%

The travel industry has also seen remarkable growth as a result of online shopping. Because of the increase in sites offering cheaper means of travel, online shoppers are taking advantage of comparison sites to make their travel arrangements. A few of the products purchased include booking hotels, airline flights, cruises, and rental cars.

The surge in popular brand name online retail outlets has resulted in many shoppers buying top brand products at significantly reduced prices. Such brand name items include: clothing, electronics, grocery items, cameras, laptops, computer accessories, home appliances, garden equipment, web based services, toys and games, office supplies, DVDs, CDs, and cellular phones. Online automobile and auto parts shopping have become a very popular trend, particularly with online auction sites. Shopping for accessories such as jewelry and makeup is also very popular. As well, accessorizing online is popular because it allows shoppers to explore all sorts of fashion items before they make a purchase.

The biggest benefit of online shopping is that it gives consumers access to millions of products at discounted prices. You can also comparison shop against many online retail sites to make sure you are getting the best deal. Online shopping also gives consumers access to hard to find products. If an item is sold out in the stores, you can be sure you may find it online. Shopping online gives shoppers access to millions of different products and product name brands. As well, most online retailers provide free shipping with their orders.

According to Nielsen Online, "more than 85 percent of the world’s online population has used the Internet to make a purchase, increasing the market for online shopping by 40 percent in the last two years. Globally more than half of Internet users have made at least one purchase online in the past month." With online sales ranking in hundreds of billions of dollars per year, online shopping seems to be the future of retail sales. For instance, computer hardware and software, travel packages, automobiles and automobile parts, and apparel or accessories account for billions of dollars in online business each year.

As technology evolves and expands, new ways of purchasing products is changing how we shop. With improvements in secure payment processing and the wide variety of products and deals available, more people are now taking advantage of shopping online. Consumers are no longer restricted to local shopping areas as they can now find great products from all over the world.
