The Hummer H1 is a sophisticated all-terrain vehicle based on the M998. This off-road model is termed as a High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV). Popularly called as Humvee, the vehicle was created by the company AM General. Hummer H1 was a rapid success that the production, which started in 1992, continued till 2006.

The Hummer H1 took its origination from the photos of Operation Desert Storm. The idea was later refined and released as a vehicle for the use of civilians. The makers of the Hummer H1 disappointed the public by announcing that the model would come to closure by the end of 2006. This was announced due to the new emission law for Diesel engine vehicles by the government of the United States.

The company however tried to improvise on the emission of the vehicle, so that the conditions of the law would be met. But the improvisation directly affected the cost of the vehicle and made it unaffordable. The company still supplies the all-terrain Hummer H1 to the Unites States Military though.

The Hummer H1 has three different models. The most acclaimed one is a convertible-like soft-top model. The second one is a one with four doors and a hard top, which is more like a pickup truck. The third model is the Wagon body version. The last models available in the market are the convertible soft-top ones and the station wagon model.

The Hummer H1 currently has five different engine types and three automatic transmission types. The Hummer H1 shares many common features with the HMMWV. The brakes, axles, frame and major body panels are identical as the HMMWV. The H1s are different from one another in the way they handle and also in the alignment of their interiors. The Hummers that are used for the highways and passenger are compromised for maximum mobility.

The Hummers that concentrate on the civilian market are relatively stable than the passenger ones. The Hummer H1 stands undisturbed even in 30 inches of water. It has a stock ground clearance of 16 inches and can also climb a 22-inch step. Most of the Hummers come with a great feature – the Central Tire inflation System. This unique feature of the hummer enables the driver to increase or decrease the tire pressure at his will. The inboard brakes and portal gears are some of the unusual features of this fascinating machine.

The Hummer H1 has been improvised to a latest Hummer H1 alpha. The improvisation has touched almost every area of the H1 right from the transmission to engine and to design. The only area of the Hummer H1 that makes the buyers think twice is the its price. The high-end all-terrain vehicle is priced at $40,500 for the basic model. The fully loaded version of the basic model is priced at $54,700. The latest model, the Hummer H1 was priced at $129,399 while the wagon model was priced at a whooping $140,796. But this factor almost becomes inconsiderate when it comes to the features of the Hummer. Be it the top of a hill or a stormy desert, you can still trail with a Hummer.
