A lot of people would like to get comfortable with their own skin. Thus, they really don’t mind losing those excess pounds. However, if you’re on the borderline of being obese or overweight—or, worse, you’re already at it—you may want to seriously consider removing those unwanted fats for the following reasons:

1. Obesity can lead to different kinds of serious diseases. Do you know that obesity is now considered as a primary risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, arthritis, and even diabetes? Cardiovascular illnesses are now the leading causes of death all over the world. Simply put, if you’re obese, you are very prone to shortening your own life—even if you’re not a smoker or an alcoholic.

2. You can be more susceptible to cancer. So many people are scared of the big C. Here are the reasons why. First, some of the diseases are not diagnosed until you’re on the later stage. Take colon cancer, for example. You would never know that you have it unless you’re already on stage 4, which means you can only extend, not cure, the illness. Second, there are limited options for treatment in cancer. A good portion of those who have them still die.

Overweight females are more prone to certain kinds of cancer such as ovary, colon, breast, and gall bladder. Men, on the other hand, can develop prostate or rectum cancer.

3. Obesity can make you suffer sleep apnea. There are different forms of sleep apnea; all of them should be taken seriously. This is because they can lead to short periods of non-breathing. If the brain is not able to acquire enough oxygen, it can suffer permanent problems. It can also lead to heart failure. Obesity, however, is one of the leading reasons why a person can suffer from sleeping apnea.

4. You can enhance fertility. Obesity is considered to be one of the major causes of polycystic ovarian syndrome or PCOS, a disorder that prevents them from conceiving. This is because the follicles were not given a chance to mature and be fertilized by the sperm cells.

5. You can have more freedom to move. An overweight or obese person has the tendency to become more sedentary. A strenuous activity would always be very exhausting. It can cause shortness of breath and muscle pains.

6. You will let go of your insecurities. Whether you like it or not, people have already developed a standard when it comes to what should look good and what should not. Those who are known to be fat are often subjected to teases and ridicules, making them fall into depression. Some of them are not accepted by certain jobs, and they could not simply strut and be proud of themselves simply because others looked down on their physical attributes.

Losing weight therefore can bring back the confidence that you may have lost along the way. It makes you more prepared to get over hurdles and look straight at other people’s eyes because you know that you have what it takes to compete with the rest of the world.
