Moving is a hassle. There's no one out there that's going to argue with that-anyone who actually says they enjoy the process of moving is, in my humble opinion, either lying or crazy! (Or the kind of person who does paperwork in their spare time for fun…apparently they haven't officially made the crazy list yet, although you couldn't swear that by me!) There are always hundreds of tiny details to be seen to, not the least of which is getting your car insurance switched over.

Moving Your Car Insurance

If you're just moving to another address in state you shouldn't have any problem moving your car insurance policy. All you have to do is pick up the phone and make a quick call to change your address. They'll change the information on your account, and voila! You're good to go!

If you're moving out of state making arrangements with various car insurance companies might get a little more complicated. There are some providers that operate on a national basis, which means you shouldn't have a problem getting your information switched over. All you have to do is call your insurer and let them know where you're living. They'll take a look at your current policy and make the changes you need to make to match up to your new state of residence. This usually just means realigning your liability coverage levels and making the necessary adjustments if you've moved to a no-fault car insurance state.

If your insurer doesn't operate on a national basis you're going to want to do a little bit of homework and start comparing car insurance quotes as quickly as possible. The last thing you want to do is get caught driving uninsured right after you move. That never sets the right tone for your relationship with local law enforcement!

Moving Everything Else

Of course, moving your car insurance coverage is only a small part of the giant headache that calls itself moving day. There are plenty of other things you need to do before you can consider yourself settled. For example, have you made arrangements to cut off your utilities and left a forwarding address for future bills? Speaking of forwarding addresses, have you filled out the appropriate paperwork at the post office to have your mail forwarded? And changed your address with your creditors and any outstanding accounts (including your credit cards)?

Moving can wreak massive havoc with your bills when statements get lost in the mail. If you've got the funds, it's almost never a bad idea to pay a month ahead just to make sure you don't fall behind.

Once you're done changing addresses (and made arrangements for changing schools, if necessary) it's time to talk about how you're going to get your belongings from point A to point B. You can either hire a U-haul (which, coincidentally, is probably not going to be covered by your current car insurance provider) or call in a moving company. Movers are expensive, but they can be invaluable when it comes to getting your things moved with a minimum of fuss and muss.

Moving can be a giant pain in the you-know-what, but it doesn't have to be. Make your arrangements as soon as possible and you'll be amazed at how easily you can slide into your new life.
