With fuel prices shooting up yet again and, scappage allowance apart, the cost of buying cars on the rise, one of the hardest groups to be hit will be the over-50s who account for two thirds of private car owners. For them it's now more important than ever to control motoring costs by shopping around for the cheapest insurance deal.

And it's surprising - the over-50s have a huge choice of insurers and those in their mid-50s to 60s qualify for some very cheap deals indeed - cheaper than motorists in other age groups.

Not only the over 50's usually experienced drivers, but they're also consdered to be much more responsible and, if retired, to drive far fewer miles.

From your late 60's onwards your premiums will start to rise as statistics show that you're more likely to beome accident prone. In practice, that depends on each individual's driving ability, rather than just their age. For example, their eyesight, reaction times and general confidence behind the wheel.

But, even though some insurance companies regard older drivers as a higher risk, many still look to insure this age group, including several of the biggest high street names - though your options do become more limited once you hit 75.

As would be expected, Help the Aged, Age Concern, Saga and RIAS do not have an upper age limit. Many other general insurers will apply age limits for new applicants but most will continue to insure their existing clients well into old age. For insurers such as Direct Line, Abbey National, Egg and Hastings Direct they withdraw cover for all policyholders at age 80.

Clearly, the area you live in and the type of car you drive and your mileage will obviously affect the cost of your insurance but you can opt for a higher voluntary excess which will certainly keep your premiums down.

But in the end the way to a great deal is to go online. We know it takes a little time to get the quotes but normally it's worth it. To make the comparisons easier we suggest you find one of the ites which allow you to enter your details just once and then the web sites obtains quotes from forty or more insurers. That will save you time and help yu make meaningful comparisons.

And please do make comparisons. Don't just pick on price. Look at what you’re getting for your money. Policy features do vary between insurer. For example, if your car was off the road following an accident would you need a courtesy car? Not all insurers provide these. So take time, there's no hurry, and make sure you get a cheap price and the cover you want.

Our usual advice is to get your car insurance online. It's both quicker and cheaper to organise online and you are under no pressure. You can surf at any time of the day or night and you are never pressurised to "buy now". You can even spread your searches over days or weeks if you like - just make sure you're get it before your existing policy runs out!
