Email Open Rates: Tips on How to Gain Customer Interest

Email open rates are a mechanism to derive the results of how many recipients of emails have actually ended up opening the bulk emails that were sent by a specific online marketing entity. These rates are calculated after a function from with the email calls on an image from the online marketer’s server. This can only happen once the recipient opens the mail or even previews the mail. In most email clients, where images are not allowed to be automatically downloaded, the open rate measurement becomes even more accurate because the user has to click to download all imagery. However, bulk email received on a handheld device may not be subject to the same rules. It is discrepancies between devices and email clients that still make the measure of open rates a bit contentious. However, it is the only measure available today. What follows from these rate statistics is the question, how do I improve email open rates?

The first step is to ensure that the subject line, which is the customer facing first view, must be scripted in such a way that the recipient actually wants to open the email. Therefore, make your subject lines professional, honest, and according to internet etiquette. Do not try to mislead the user with line like “you owe me money” or shout out by saying CLICK HERE TO WIN. These would be caught by a spam filter or by the recipient’s better judgment.

The next way to improve email open rates is to be a trusted source for bulk emailing. This means that you need to acquire the customer by using an opt-in method like a confirmation email. This is a popular method used in newsletters and is worth trying out for better email open rates.

Another crucial technique is to dodge spam filters. This can be done by simply using intelligent wording in bulk mailers and not using spam words or using the same words continuously.

Timing can also be very crucial though the question of when to send your bulk email material to the client is debatable. A good rule of thumb is to send information to your prospective clients after the afternoon lunch hour. This is the time that most people do bother to check their personal mails and take a break from the routine of work.

These are some tips to try and improve email open rates; however, the final judgment call on how to improve email hit rates is a creative one. You need to learn by trial and error what makes your customers open bulk email as well as what kind of combination of wording works in a bulk emailing exercise. Another important point, which was already mentioned here, is spam filters. These can really ruin your marketing exercise so take the time to understand them and figure out how they work so that your bulk mails at least have a fighting chance when they do reach a recipient’s mailbox.
