In terms of evolution, compound bows are definitely modern inventions. These bows are made from compound materials and are geared for better performance in terms of accuracy. Although these bows are not as far reaching as say, the cross bows, these make up in terms of precision instead. A well trained compound bow archer can almost always hit any target (moving or stationary) regardless of the archer’s shooting conditions (open space or closed quarters, moving or stationary, or whatever the weather might be.)

Speed is a critical factor as well. Seasoned archers can be speed junkies sometimes, and for a good reason too. The swiftness of each and every shot (velocity) can be a critical factor when it comes to tournaments and setting speed records. However, beginners are also discovering that these bows are easier to handle because these can be adjusted easily to suit their skills. If you are wondering what other benefits of compounds bows are to be had, here are a few more:

1. Because these are usually made from lightweight alloys, compound bows are constructed shorter than most other bows (e.g. cross bows, long bows, etc.) and are therefore easier to carry, manipulate and adjust. Although other bows can be adjusted as well, it takes a long while for the archer to get used to the changes in string or limb tensile. More often than not, the person has to adjust to the weapon’s limitations. Compound bows can be easily tweaked to suit the needs of the archer.

2. Aside from the sheer convenience of being able to transport the bows wherever, whenever; compound bows are also more manageable in closed quarters. This means that an archer would not need a lot of moving space to load, aim and let fly an arrow. This is in relation to the needed space when it comes to loading long bows and cross bows.

3. Compound bows can be used in almost any climate … come rain or sun or sleet. Unlike wood that tends to expand or become brittle with sudden changes of temperature and humidity, compound bows remain relatively unchanged. The lightweight but hardy materials also guarantee that the compound bow’s lifespan is very long, and would not need as much maintenance as wood based weapons.

4. Naturally enough, accuracy is the name of the game, especially when it comes to archery. The cable and pulley systems of the most conventional compound bows help build up not only accurate shots, but consistent pulling strength as well. The mechanical release (and in some cases, the forgiving attributes of the bow as well) ensures that the kinetic power of the pull does not deter the aim. In other words, the limbs and the cams store most of the pulled string’s energy, and that energy does not carry on to the steadying arm that carries the bow.

5. Consistent shots also help build up effective shooting techniques in a hurry. Because the bows can be adjusted easily according to the length of the person’s arm, skill or stance; learning to shoot an arrow can be taught in a scientific fashion, keeping the trial and error phase at a minimum.
