There are a lot of companies out there at the moment promoting their version of energy efficient homes. Of course all of these options only relate to the customer who is building their own house from scratch. I have looked at this in depth and there is very little material out there that advises the client on what he or she can do to their present house without actually moving or knocking it to the ground. In the present economic climate there is less and less of us are moving and more of us who are updating our current apartment or house with a view that we will be in the current dwelling for longer than originally anticipated. This being the case I'm surprised that the government hasn't moved quicker on this promoting the energy-efficient products that are suitable for refurbishment rather than waiting on person to move into a newly built house in order to benefit from energy efficiency.

Slowly but surely everyone is getting more conscious of energy costs; this is even more sensitive by the fact that in general people have less money and all costs are being looked at more closely now than in the past. So if there is a real solution of there that doesn't cost an arm and a leg people will genuinely look at it, if they believe it will save them money in the future. The golden rule before you make any decision in terms of using new energy efficient products in your house or commercial building, is to make sure that your product has the necessary certification. If a product or system has the appropriate certification it is easily supplied from the provider. On the other hand if a product doesn't have the certification you are taking the risk without adequate historical knowledge that the product works. In general with all uncertified products it means that it has failed the tests associated with it or that certification is pending. All suppliers that are pending certification will tell you that it is only a matter of time before certification is approved, this is not always the case because some products we go through extensive testing before certification and many products fail this process and therefore do not get the required certification.

External cladding is one of the hardest products out there to achieve certification on mainly because it is the first protection for any building. It is the product that gets exposed to the weather conditions. If the auditors don't have adequate historical evidence they tend not to grant certification as his almost impossible to predict how a product will perform when exposed to external conditions over very long periods of time. Of course there are tests that one can do, like fire tests, water absorption tests, sound tests and much more but there is nothing like the real test of a product has been around for 40 years or more. In some countries the rules are relaxed for commercial buildings in order to have some mechanism to try out new products to see how they perform. This is why you will see a much more varied external finish to a commercial building rather than a residential building where the finishes tends to be more traditional.

I think it is incumbent on the government to lead the way to direct people in terms of what products are available on the market, what products are certified and also what range of products that avail of the current grants.
