As a matter of fact home security steps for apartments and for houses are basically the same. However, there are some different steps for each type; in other words there are some steps that are required only for apartments. This article focuses only on apartment security.

First of all you should know that, by law, the owner of the apartment (landlord), whose apartment you rent, is responsible for creating a living environment that is safe and comfortable to you. Thus, if you strongly feel there is something in the neighborhood that might cause a threat to you, you have every right to ask the landlord to remove the source of the threat.

You should make sure that you are well protected from any danger to your security. There should be sufficient lighting inside and outside the apartment complex. You should ask your landlord to install sufficient lighting in the complex and its surrounding area. He/she is also required to replace burnt out bulbs, if there are any.

If your laundry is outside the apartment, you should make sure that you are safe to go there. It is not advisable to walk there at night. If you ought to, try to ask your neighbor to go this location together with you. This security measure applies also to other facilities such as swimming pool, convenience store and fitness center.

If your name is printed in your mailbox, move the lable inside the box, so that only you and the postman can see your name. If it is impossible make sure that your full name is not shown on the label. Have only your first name to be printed or the first letter of your first name and your last name. This way will make burglars unable of difficult to find out your phone number which he/she can use to call your apartment to know whether there is anybody at home or not.

When you are buzzed by someone from the entrance, do not open the door unless you know or expect him/her. Do not buzz in any stranger, although he/she insists that they come to see a relative or friend in the apartment complex. For your own door, you should have a door chain and a peephole installed.

If your apartment has a main door, see that it is always locked. Usually a tenant is provided with a separate key for this main door and, if the door has an electronic lock, he/she will also be provided with the security code for this appliance. The code holder should never tell the code to anyone else.If the apartment complex has a main entrance gate (an external security element) you should also make sure not to give out the security code that is used to open this gate.

If a stranger asks to come inside your apartment saying that he/she was sent by your landlord, call first your landlord to ascertain that the person was indeed sent by him/her. When dealing with a stranger, you should be very careful as he/she can be a bogus caller trying to steal some thing from you or even trying to kill you.
