Whether they admit it or not, it is the dream of almost every man to have a sterling home bar, complete with comfortable kitchen stools, a full liquor selection and all of the accoutrements that go with it. In some cases, these men don’t even drink themselves, but the idea of having a fully functional home bar is simply too attractive of an idea to pass up. Here are a few must have tips if you are venturing out on the home bar path.

Get your heights right

Ask a man to decorate a bedroom, bathroom or living room and you may be greeted with shrugs and disinterest, but ask as man to decorate his home bar and you will likely be greeted with a flurry of activity. There are a lot of steps that go into designing the perfect home bar, but one that many men overlook is matching up the perfect heights of the stool and the bar itself. You don’t want to get stuck with stools that are 6 inches higher than the bar and you don’t want to be stuck with stools that are six inches too short, either. Get out your measuring tape and check the height twice just to be sure.

Comfort, comfort, comfort

In some decors, kitchen stools are simply a decretive touch that is nice to look at but isn’t really used that much. At a bar, the opposite is true. Your selection of kitchen stools for your home bar is absolutely predicated on comfort. Go for leather upholstery and extra padding in the seats. You are going to be entertaining from your home bar and you need to be sure that everyone will be comfortable for 3 or more hours at a time (or longer if you enjoy cricket). Don’t drop the ball when it comes to comfort, otherwise, your home bar will be deemed a complete failure.

Swivelling

It may sound a bit juvenile, but men love to swivel on bar stools. It is a hold over from childhood that men never really shake, and why should they? Having kitchen stools that swivel add an extra dimension, especially during the big game and especially if you are working two screens at once. You try watching multiple televisions from a kitchen chair that doesn’t move at all. The experience falls flat. Swivelling is also important in large crowds to help facilitate easy communication.

Sight lines are key

Finally, those guests who come over to enjoy your home bar need to have clear and uninterrupted sight lines of the television (or televisions), your bar and of high traffic areas. Make sure you keep this in mind as you plan out your seating arrangements and stool heights. People need to be able to come and go without blocking out the television, so you may need to check and double check where you put things. Consider mounting a television to the ceiling or putting one in a high place like on top of a bookshelf.
