The idea of starting your own basement pub has become so ingrained and so popular in today’s culture, several top television shows, such as The Family Guy, have based entire episodes around it. Everyone knows that good bars all have the same basic things in common: strong drinks, a good atmosphere, sports on television and comfortable bar stools. Even if you don’t sit at the bar on a regular basis, it is nice to know that your favourite bar or pub has comfortable stools, just in case. If you are thinking about taking the dive and starting your own basement pub, here are a few essential bar stool related tips to keep in mind.

Avoid backs

If you notice, one thing every pub has in common is stools without backs. This is for several reasons. Yes, bars and pubs do want you to stick around and drink to your heart’s content, but they don’t want you living there. Backs on stools are more comfortable and people have even been known to fall asleep on breakfast bar stools that have backs. Backs can also bang into other stools or other people during swivelling, which can cause arguments, spilled drinks and even fights. Avoid backs at all costs.

Limit Swivelling

For the exact same reason why backs are sometimes a problem, you probably want to avoid stools that feature full 360 degree swivelling. As people slowly get drunk, they begin to suffer from poor judgement, which means that accidents can and will happen on a regular basis. The last thing you need is someone spinning around on a bar stool and knocking the drink out of someone else’s hand. Remember, if you plan on selling drinks, you are going to need a license, and you are also responsible for any harm that comes to anyone while at your place of residence.

Lower is better

Speaking of alcohol, not only can our favourite substance help to diminish our judgement, but it can also hamper our balance. Getting on to and off of higher bar stools only increases the chances that someone will stumble and fall. Even if your basement bar is only for close family members, you are asking for trouble if you choose to use high breakfast bar stools instead of shorter ones. You’ll be doing everyone who comes downstairs a favour.

You’ll Love Leather

There is a reason why the overwhelming majority of pub stools are either upholstered in leather or feature no upholstery at all: stains. Many of today’s most popular alcoholic beverages feature liquors that will stain any fabric on contact, and if you plan on running a pub for your friends, you may need to find a fabric that blood comes out of with little effort. The correct way to go on all counts here is with leather. Not only is leather stain resistant, it also stands up very well to wear and tear and is resistant to ripping, as well.
