If there's anyone out there that doesn't have a vested interest in learning how to save money on their auto insurance coverage, their voice isn't the loudest one being heard. As a matter of fact, at the moment it's barely a squeak on the horizon! All of us want to be able to get great insurance coverage at rock bottom prices, but until you understand how the insurance industry works that goal can seem as far away as Don Quixote's Impossible Dream.

The good news is, cheap auto insurance isn't impossible. It isn't even improbable! It's just a little hard to come by.

The first step for any driver when it comes to the quest for cheap auto insurance needs to be keeping their driving record clean. A single accident can send your insurance rates soaring. On the other hand, a five year good driver discount can save you 5% or more. Can you see the benefits?

Most insurance companies recommend that you take advantage of driver's education courses designed to help remove negative points from your license. These can be in lieu of a ticket (as ordered by a judge) or just because you're of a mind to improve your driving record. Either way, it's good news for your auto insurance rates, and these classes are available through both county and private providers in most of the 50 states.

Secondly, are you taking advantage of all of the discounts your auto insurance company has to offer? You might be surprised at what can save you money when it comes to your coverage. For example, did you know that adding a car alarm or other security features to your car can do wonderful things for your rates? Or that teachers and engineers are statistically less likely to have accidents than any other profession, and they get to reap the cheap insurance coverage because of it.

And we're not even talking about what's going to happen the day you turn 25. There's something magical about finally transitioning out of that "high risk teenage driver" state that can practically transform the amount of money you're paying for your insurance to make it resemble practically nothing.

Thirdly, don't forget that not all auto insurance companies are created equal. Each company has its own policies when it comes to insurance and discounts, which means each company is going to have a different auto insurance rate to offer you. It's a hassle to shop around for insurance, granted, but isn't it a bigger hassle to have to pay ridiculously high rates when you could be paying so much less?

Remember, the key to saving money on your auto insurance is to minimize the risk. Minimizing risk means minimizing the chances that you're going to get in an accident in the first place and, if you are unlucky enough to find yourself in an accident, to minimize the damage to yourself, your cars and your passengers. Once you've minimized the risk you'll have succeeded in minimizing your auto insurance rates as well.
