Accurate profiling is probably something that an online vendor may not be able to provide.

This is an activity wherein you continuously add more email addresses to refresh the database and you weed out some of the non-purchasing, dead lead mail addresses. This is important because mailing costs money, especially in an offline set up. This is from the perspective of bandwidth costs, which are incremental from a per unit standpoint.

When you opt for an online option, you should ensure that the service provider follows CAN SPAM guidelines. If this is not the case, you could end up in a lot of trouble and possible be classified as a spammer because of the methods of dissemination or any other discrepancy.
