NIE number which stands for Número de identidad de extranjero or Identification number for Foreigners is a piece of a document that allows you to own the properties you want. In what way? Having your own NIE is a way for you and other non-resident property owners to pay taxes. So as not to incur any breach on Spain's legislation in owning properties and also for you to obtain that piece of property, you have to secure that piece of paper. NIE is necessary in dealing with various transactions. It is required in applying for business permits, buying a vehicle or signing in to different insurance policies and health plans. In short, Spain's NIE number is your first ticket to any purchases or bills you will have.

Supposing you have already selected that perfect spot you want in Spain. You have already contacted an agency to take care of the mortgage to that same property only to be informed that you need to secure your NIE first. But processing takes you what? One month? Two months? Then the property you were supposed to own is already off the market. How frustrating. But it is a lesson learned. So how does a person apply for a Spanish NIE number?

To apply for a Spanish NIE number you have to first prepare all necessary documents and make sure it is complete before filing it. The documents include:

1)your passport and a photocopy of the main page of your passport

2) 2 recent passport size color photographs with a plain colored background

3)an original document (plus a photocopy) that justifies your reason for applying for an NIE number

4)2 copies of the appropriate application form filled out and signed.

5)A document that demonstrates your legal entry into Spain. Applicable only if you are not an EU national.

Second thing to do is to take the documents to the designated police station, if possible somewhere you intend to buy a property. After giving all the required forms you will be handed with a receipt called resguardo and the next thing you know, you will only be waiting on for 15 days to acquire your Spanish NIE.

But what if you are not residing nor visiting Spain is there another way to acquire the NIE? Yes of course. You can just simply go to the nearest Spanish Consulate and process the application of your NIE. As what is mentioned above, you have to first prepare the necessary documents:

1)Passport and a photocopy of the main page of your passport

3)2 copies of the appropriate application form duly completed

4)A self-addressed envelope but without stamp

5)Another envelope addressed to: Comisaría General de Extranjería y Documentación Dirección General de Policia C/ General Pardiñas, 9028006 Madrid

6)An original document (plus a photocopy) that justifies your reason for applying for an NIE number.

Remember not to sign your application form beforehand, because you are required to sign it only in the presence of a consular official. After preparing all the documents submits it to the Spanish Consulate then you are done. But try to remember that the Spanish Consulate is only a bridge between the applicant and the Spanish authorities and is not capable to issue your NIE. So just wait for at least 4-6 weeks for your NIE to be posted.
