The compilation of the crime records of a certain person is what is more commonly known as police record. Some of the records being kept within the United States in both the federal and state level are listing arrests, convictions or prosecutions of a certain person. Police records are really very important because it has the information which is essential for the police to maintain order, peace and stability. It has information about different past crimes. Also, it has information about different criminals with and their details. With this information, the police are being helped in their analysis of different criminal activities. These records are being used by officers as a guide or outline that will help in coming up with solutions to crimes.

The department of records usually forward their copies of their reports to the suitable agencies and courts. Then they some public information, usually the requested ones, available to the public. Aside from that, statistical requests are also being handled by the department. They also compile uniform crime reports (UCR). Police records are really very important. They have to be preserved and compiled with care. Before, maintaining and compiling all the records is considered as a daunting task since most of the reports and files are still on paper.

Recently, there has been a decline in terms of records on paper. With computers, record keeping now has been revolutionized. Record keeping is now more organized. Records are now kept on a centralized database making it available to all within the department. Whenever police officers need some information, all they need to do is use their computers. However, they must have some internet connection. Indeed, given the technological advancements, record keeping has become much more sophisticated. Technology has make police processes evolved. Also, there are several stringent security measures that have been applied to the databases. Shortcomings and limitations are now overcome and there is a more efficient way of disseminating information.

Aside from the police, people could also access police records online. This is useful for people who need to check on someone’s criminal background. These online records are available for free. Thus, could take a look into those records. These records had been organized by different county and state jurisdiction. Several paper works are also being required before you could access these records. You could not get someone’s complete record by just going to one place. That’s why, it is sometimes necessary that you go to all the police stations within the country when you do your background checks.

Online viewing of police records are much easier. With today's technology, complete background check about anybody could be done in just some minutes. Several information about the person like his residential history, arrest records, marital history, known associates, aliases and others could be known right away.

All of the police records within the country are usually assembled together within one database. This is also frequently being updated. Some online services make you pay for this to cover the costs of maintaining the database. But at least, you are assured that you get updated and accurate information.
