2009 marked the 100th anniversary of Tel-Aviv. This is a wonderful opportunity to rediscover Tel-Aviv and its lively culture, festivals, historic sites, coffee shops, restaurants and beaches.

Israel grew out of Tel-Aviv, a city that “doesn’t stop” and for a good reason. Unlike any other city in the world, Tel-Aviv is alive 24 hours a day. Looking for a pastrami sandwich around 4 AM? You got it. Even New-Yorkers go to sleep at some point, but Tel-Aviv’s legendary night life scene never rests.

Everyone has his own Tel-Aviv: the beach bums that literally live on the seaside boardwalk and Ben-Yehuda St. with its magnificent seafood restaurants; the shoppers that roam Dizingof Center clothing stores and the hip Shenkin St; and the culture lovers that are still looking for a parking spot near the impressive Opera House.

But even if you think you know Tel-Aviv like the back of your hand, there is still much to discover. Here are a few suggestions that can make your Israel vacation truly unforgettable and turn you into a real local Tel-Avivien.

Little Germany in Tel-Aviv

Hidden in the Shalom St. just across the Kirya, is a precious gem, a unique piece of Tel-Aviv history – the Templar Settlement named Sharona. This little German village which came to life in the 19th century by the Templars, is a piece of green heaven among the crazy traffic and fast city pace. You will discover unique German architecture, an old post-office, a 19th century bowling alley, and last but not least – underground winery which consists of endless tunnels stocked with antique barrels of wine.

Shopping with the forefathers

Neve-Tzedek was the first Jewish settlement outside the walls of Jaffa in 1887, almost 22 years before Tel-Aviv was born. This old neighborhood turned in the last years into a cultural and artistic center, full of life and creativity. Every narrow path and picturesque backyard offers a wonderful photo-op. You can visit one of Tel-Aviv’s historical museums or indulge yourself with a cup of true Israeli latte (or “upside down coffee” as they call it), check out the lovely boutiques and come home with a gift that can only be found in Israel.

The New Flea Market

Like in any major metropolitan, Tel-Aviv residents are tired of the impossible rent seek a decent place to live in the outskirts of the city. The Flea Market area in Jaffa turned into such a refuge for hip locals and the neighborhood attracts young families and artists to its unique atmosphere of old and new. The market itself offers a distinctive experience of tastes and smells, and side-by-side you can find merchants selling old junk next to luxurious designer stores selling extravagant clothing and jewelry. Don’t skip a little restaurant called Pooa in Rabbi Yohanan St. that sells everything you sit on or eat out of and make sure you order the delightful Caramelized Banana’s!

What do you say? Luckily, the airfare to Israel is cheaper than ever and you have an opportunity to break free from the office without breaking your bank account. The High-Holidays are just around the corner and now is the perfect time to visit Israel and enjoy its wonders.
