Sukkot 101 or Why Did the People of Israel Go Through So Much Trouble Instead of Getting a Pop-Up Sukkah

For forty years our ancestors walked through the Sinai Desert. Forty years in the Sinai Desert! Can you imagine how hard it is to find a decent motel in the Sinai Desert? (And I’m not talking about the Red Sea shore where you can get a hut for only a few Liras.)

Even today, the best you can do in the desert is find a nice Bedouin and sleep on his rug. Yes, they make a good coffee, and they are great hosts, but when you schlep all day and it is 110 degrees outside - you just have to make sleeping arrangements in advance. Your people need a hot shower, they need to cook the quail that just fell from the sky and you don’t want to go around like a meshuga hoping that there’s going to be a tent you can crash in.

So what do you do? I mean, you are obviously Jewish and you’re not so good with building things, right? Well, you complain a little and then look up to the sky and pray for a phone number of reliable contractor who can give you a good price on a home, like the one that just did your wife’s second cousin’s place in Brooklyn (the pipes make noises sometimes, but she says it doesn’t bother her and you really can’t beat the price).

But then you realize that there’s no signal in the desert, especially back in the day, and you can’t call anyone so you pray a little more and then, out of nowhere, seven clouds of glory shelters you under their magnificent presence.

Still, the clouds are great and everything, but they don’t really filter the harmful UV rays and the kids always wanted to go camping anyway and you’re already in the desert so you decide to build up a Sukkah.

How? You take four poles and stick them in the ground. Then you cover them with walls and find out that you only bought enough material for 3 and a half walls from that merchant on a camel who said it was a real metzia and now your wife calls you a groyce chuchem and says that the Levi family next door have all four walls, but you know that two and a half walls are kosher enough and besides, its good for ventilation and you can’t sleep when there’s no air. For the final touch you throw a schach on top because you don’t want the neighbors peeping.

If only the people of Israel had a pop-up Sukkah! Unfortunately, while in the desert the Jewish mind was busy with other important things, like navigation, and couldn’t think about a portable, light weight Sukkah that requires no tools to assemble. The Pop-up Sukkah folds to 1 inch (!) carrying case and features a tear resistant floor, 2 screened windows and shades, and the Schach is included.

Another cool idea, especially for those of you traveling during Succos, is the super portable "Sukkah on the Go". This new portable Sukkah snaps together in under five minutes with absolutely no tools necessary. It will fit into any trunk and meet airline standards for check-in if you want to have a Sukkah in the sky.

So don’t get caught without a sukkah when those ushpizin will come a-knockin’. Even if you're looking for a traditional Sukkah, you can find everything you need in the Succos Center at www.eichlers.com, your one-stop High-Holiday-Shop.
