There can be many different medical causes for insomnia. Insomnia is not always related to lifestyle or psychological issues. Oftentimes chemical imbalances in your body, upsets in your hormone regulation, and other medical problems can cause a person to have very poor sleep. Therefore if you find yourself having trouble sleeping, the logical first step is to see a medical practitioner for a thorough physical evaluation.

There are many different types of medical conditions that can cause poor sleep. Conditions such as infections, certain types of allergies, painful arthritis, different types of pains in the back or any other pain, certain types of headaches or migraines, indigestion, coughing, or other types of conditions can all lead to poor sleep. If you find yourself having trouble sleeping it is very important for you to know if any of the above mentioned medical conditions are causing the sleep problem for you. If so you should be treated as soon as possible.

Insomnia is not only a lack of sleep. It can also be the first sign of a major medical disorder such as a kidney problem or a thyroid problem. These are the types of problems that need to be treated immediately, and there are even a few life threatening disorders, such as certain specific brain tumors, that first present themselves as forms of insomnia. These are very rare conditions however you should always make sure that you are very healthy, especially if you're worried about being sick or if you have other unexplained symptoms in addition to your being unable to sleep.

Also, insomnia can be a side effect of many different types of medications. This is very true, for example, with many bronchodilating drugs for asthma, the certain steroid preparations, or with any other medications that may contain caffeine. Talk to your medical practitioner about whether any medications that you're currently taking my cause insomnia, and read the package insert the comes the medication yourself to see if it lists insomnia as a possible side effect.

Addictions to drug and alcohol can also interfere seriously with your sleep. In a large national study, dependencies on alcohol and drugs were named as the number one cause of insomnia in more than 12% of all patients who are suffering from chronic insomnia. If you use, on a regular basis, alcohol or mood altering drugs, you should consider this as a contributing factor to your problem.

Sleeping pills themselves can also cause sleeping problems. If you use sleeping pills ask yourself the following questions:

Do you find yourself taking medication to help you sleep more than once a week?

If you find yourself using sleeping pills have they lost their initial effect? Have you had to increase the number of pills or the dosage you take to help you sleep?

Have you worried that your doctor might not let you renew your sleeping pill prescription?

Have you stopped taking these pills and found that you didn't sleep hardly at all the following nights?

If you said yes to any and above questions you may want to consider seeking medical advice on how you should deal with the problems the sleeping pills are causing.
