Although many of us are happy when back to school time rolls around, many of us also feel a bit of wariness when we think of all the money to be spent on school clothes and supplies, especially if you have more than one child in your home. As soon as we start to see the ads and the school supplies in the stores in early August we are reminded of the long lines in the stores and the dinging cash registers that attest to our empty pockets and limited budget for other things. But back to school shopping doesn't always have to break the bank. By taking control and setting limits as well as making use of items still in decent shape we can lessen the burden of shopping for our children when school time rolls around again.

One way to save money when it comes to back to school shopping is to go through old clothes to see what can still be used before you go shopping for new clothes. I usually do this in early August so that I am done in time for al the good sales. In our home we spend a day having the kids try on their good clothes and sort out the ones that we know will still fit in the fall. We wash all the keepers and put them up until the school year begins. Although your children may not want to wear the older clothes the first few days of the new school year, the chances are that by the second week they won't even think about it.

Another way to save a considerable amount of money is to make sure you shop for new clothes early on so that you can get the best prices. Many parents end up waiting until the last minute to shop for school clothes and by that time have to pay whatever the stores are asking but if you go early you can choose what to buy based on sale prices and wait on other things. If you spend a few weeks buying new clothes you will likely end up paying much less in the end.

You can also save money on school clothes by going to thrift stores and garage sales. In many cases you can find clothes that are close to brand new if you take the time to look. You may not want to replace new clothes for used but it is a great way to add to your child's wardrobe without spending a fortune.

Buy school supplies early and you will save a ton of money. If you catch the sales in early August you will be amazed at how cheap you can get all of your children's paper, pencils, and whatever else they may need to start the school year off on the right foot.

There are so many things to enjoy about the back to school season that you hardly want to ruin it by worrying about school shopping. Relax and vow to find ways to save money this year and the stress won't be nearly as bad as the year before.
