There are different ways to hold a pencil for drawing. There isn't one ideal way, but several choices, depending on what you are attempting to achieve.

The Various Ways to Hold a Pencil for Drawing

* Grip your pencil like a writing tool, close to the tip, when sketching outlines or adding details to your drawing. This allows maximum control of the pencil.

* For drawing long, steady or flowing lines, grab the pencil near the middle with the end steadily in your palm. This provides stability and control to draw long, even lines.

* While shading bigger areas, take full advantage of holding the pencil midway, slanted by the side so it is roughly parallel to the paper. This lets you to utilize the side of the graphite to make even strokes.

* For parts requiring darker shading, clasp the pencil near the tip ( the pencil is underneath your hand) and push the side of the head to the paper. This creates deeper, darker tones for small areas of dark shading.

The Perfect Amount of Pressure for Sketching With Pencils

The quantity of pressure needed when drawing with pencils is different depending on the end effect you want and how hard the pencil is. For laying out the preliminary sketch, always use a hard pencil and apply only soft pressure.

Softer pencils give darker lines, so depending on how dark you want the area to be; you will have to regulate pressure. For example, a 8B pencil with a heavy hand will produce a very dark line and with a lighter hand it will still be dark but less so.

There is no common rule for the magnitude of pressure to give. Test with different pencils and pressures to achieve the effects you want.

You should keep one thing in mind: for drawing darker lines forever prefer using a softer pencil over putting more pressure. The rationale: excess pressure may spoil the paper.

Learn Drawing Using Swift And Smooth Pencil Movements

The most important and crucial element of popular drawings is the ability to draw with swift and smooth movements.

This requires practice and confidence. To prepare drawing smoothly and with confidence, initiate your basic sketches by a hard pencil. Draw with a light hand for this a basic outline of your drawing.

These lines may not even be observed in your final piece. Do not be too much worried with every stroke instead let your intuition provide guidance. As you gain more experience, you will become more convinced of your skill sets and techniques. This self-belief will guide you to take swift even strokes of your tools.

You may ask yourself: How to acquire the certainty and confidence necessary for this? The key is practice. Practice drawing long straight lines, practice smoothly curved lines - but always without a special picture in mind. And always focus on creating these lines using swift and smooth movements.

Maintain a sketchbook with you and when something inspires you, use it! These will help you greatly in learning pencil drawing.
