Cape Town holidays will likely see you spending large amounts of time outdoors. With beautiful sunny summer weather, you won’t want to spend a second longer indoors than you need to. And with so much natural beauty to be found in the city, you won’t be short of scenic spots to while away your sunny days. When it comes to dining in Cape Town, while there are dozens of fabulous restaurants, when the weather is at its best there is nothing more lovely than having an outdoor picnic. Whether it’s for breakfast, lunch or dinner, there are several superb spots for picnicking in the Mother City.

Breakfast in False Bay

In Cape Town, the sun rises on the False Bay side of the city. A lovely way to begin your day is with a picnic on Fish Hoek beach. This long beach is ideal for watching the sun rise up over the ocean, and is the perfect location to start a glorious day whilst on a tailor-made holiday in Cape Town. And after your picnic, you can make use of the long stretch of white sand, and walk all the way to Clovely Beach (on the far side) as the water flows over your toes. Or you can walk along the cat walk, a path running along the ocean with a number of rock pools along the way.

In the same area are other pretty beaches - perfect for breakfast picnics. Boulders Beach (about 15 minutes from Fish Hoek) is a quiet and sheltered beach ideal for picnics and swimming. One of the main attractions to this beach is the colony of penguins that live there. You can watch these little creatures waddling around the shore and swimming in the calm beach waters. Even if you’re not having a breakfast picnic, this beach is still a must to visit whilst on a Cape Town holiday.

Lunch in the Gardens or Forest

During the heat of the day, it would be nice to enjoy your picnic lunch in the shade. A couple of the best spots are Rhodes Memorial and Newlands Forest. If you choose to go up the hill to Rhodes Memorial, you can enjoy your lunch while you look out over the whole city. From the harbour, to the suburbs, to the city centre, you can gaze out over the whole of Cape Town.

A less popular tourist destination, but extremely beautiful area to visit whilst on a Cape Town holiday, is Newlands Forest. Here, you can enjoy a picnic lunch by the stream, or in a little grassy clearing. This is a particularly beautiful forest, and you can enjoy the shade of the tall pine trees while you eat your lunch. And when you’re done, you can take a gentle walk along one of the contour paths, spotting wild mushrooms and pretty birds along your way.

A Sunset Picnic at Clifton

One of the best ways to end off a day whilst on a tailor-made holiday in Cape Town is to have a picnic on one of Clifton’s 4 beaches as the sun sets over the Atlantic Ocean. The most popular beaches for sunset are Third and Fourth beach, where a range of Capetonians and tourists alike congregate to watch the magnificent pink sunset. The beaches are usually sheltered, so you won’t be up against sand flying into your food, and you won’t be too cold either. After sunset, people light candles in their groups, and the beach is light up with twinkling lights.
