If you're astute enough to have a dental insurance plan in place, are you sure that it covers everything you need? People take out dental insurance for the family, take a quick look through the policy and continue to pay the premium each year. Not a particularly sensible thing to do, actually, as it's always a good idea to check out the market at renewal time. But, back to your policy. When your children are small, it doesn't occur to you that one day the may need some orthodontic care and it's not uncommon to see youngsters wearing teeth braces. Not all policies cover orthodontic care, however.

It's time to get out your dental plan and check exactly what you're covered for. Should you find there is very little cover - or even none at all - for orthodontic work and you feel that you should have this, then maybe it's time to find an alternative provider.

There are two types of dental plans. These are Dental Discount and Dental Insurance. Discount insurance works by giving you an agreed discount off any dental treatment. Normally the scheme specifies the dentists that you use, who work within the plan. The plans are simple and are not actually an insurance as such, but a scheme where you pay a certain amount on a regular basis and a certain percentage is deducted from the dentist's account.

Dental insurance works in a similar way to any health insurance. Whilst it's more costly than a discount plan, it will typically pay around 80 per cent of your costs, even up to 100 per cent, depending on the cover you arrange. Incidentally, it's worth checking with your employer to see if they have any plans in place for dental insurance. Some companies offer a "blanket cover" for the employees for health insurance and this may cover an element of dental cover too.

These plans offer a great deal of peace of mind, particularly in today's conditions, where we find ourselves once again in the position where dentists are threatening to stage mass walkouts in protest against what they consider unfair conditions being imposed on them by the government. The last time such action was taken hundreds of dentists left the NHS and people faced waiting lists to even get on an NHS dentists patients list. There were reports of people queuing for hours whenever a dentist made it known that a new NHS list was being opened.

If you're not actually covered for dental care in any way, you should be aware that to get the treatment you want, when you want it, can cost a great deal of money. Even basic dental care is costly and particularly if you have a family, you don't know what problems are likely to occur at any time. Typically you need an emergency appointment just as you're packing for a holiday and what happens if you can't even find a dentist?

So, whether you're comparing cover with a view to changing your dental insurer or you're new to private dental care, you need to find out what's on off. There are lots of different plans, with various conditions attached and the easiest way to find the right one for you is to find an independent dental insurance advisor. You'll soon find one by going on-line and they'll offer you all the help you need to find the right cover for you and your family, at the very best price.
