Targeted website traffic is comprised of visitors to your site who are interested in your web site's niche and likely to be receptive to your product recommendations.

As you can tell, targeted website traffic is the sought after holy grail of Internet marketing. Targeted traffic is an important factor in developing sales and getting a better return on your investment.

Since the main objective of an online business is to make money, one of the strategic goals must be to draw as much targeted traffic as possible. Thus, the main interest of each online businessperson is to determine ways to secure an unending stream of already qualified, attentive visitors to their site. Plus, every businessperson wants to know how to use their marketing dollars in the most competitive way to expose their website to interested prospects who are liable to buy.

A few economical methods are regularly used to keep that flow of targeted traffic coming. Here are examples of the most endorsed methods.

Develop Relationships

One of the most important ideas in business is that your most reliable customer is often a repeat customer. Once a person buys from you it's important to keep that customer for future purchases. The most effective technique to do this online is to get your customers to opt in to your mailing list or at least subscribe to your RSS feed. Repeated communications with existing customers permits you to develop a relationship of trust that will help guarantee future purchases.

Many Internet marketers profit from a number of mailing lists. One list is for current customers. You understand these people are already customers and this list is one of the most valuable resources you will ever possess. Another list is for interested visitors who have not yet made a purchase. While not as important as the list of customers, this list of pre-qualified prospects is also very valuable.

Attract New Prospects

In addition to retaining existing customers, you need to develop your marketing efforts to attract additional prospects. There are various ways to do this including search engine optimization (SEO) and pay per click (PPC) marketing.

Search engine optimization is a term that in essence means that you make your web site appealing to search engines so your pages will be positioned high in the search results for significant keyword phrases. SEO functions are classified according to whether they affect your own website (on page optimization) or other, external websites (off page optimization).

On page optimization involves creating pages that focus on significant keyword phrases. A page that discusses "parrot food" should use that phrase a few times within the page in normal text and in headings. Other pages on your website will make use of "parrot food" as the link text pointing to that page.

Off page optimization primarily involves cooperating with other owners of websites to get them to add links on their websites to pages on your web site. If your website has lots of excellent content it may be considered an "authority" site and other webmasters will naturally link to your web site. If your site is newsworthy for some reason, local or national news sites may place a story about your web site on their site with a link to your website.

The vast majority of sites, on the other hand, do not rate spontaneous links from other sites. So, owners of websites must undertake a number of promotional activities to get links from other websites. Many site owners issue press releases that they then distribute to numerous sites that accept press releases for distribution. Perhaps the most popular scheme is to write articles and distribute them to article directories.

Article marketing includes researching, writing and distributing articles to attract targeted traffic. These articles can then be used in newsletters or copied on other websites. The articles must be instructive and directly related to a particular facet of the website you are marketing. While the article itself should not be promotional, you can include a short resource box with marketing material and links to your website. Each time your article is used in a newsletter or added to another site your resource box is included and your site gets more exposure.

Pay per click (PPC) promotion is another way to attract new prospects. In PPC marketing you target one or more important keyword phrases associated with your site. You then develop a short 3 or 4 line ad that will attract someone interested in that keyword phrase. You then bid for placement of your ad and pay every time someone clicks a link to your site. While this can be effective, competition for keyword phrases is often vigorous and profits may be low or nonexistent.

So, as a marketer of products on a website of your own, you'll want to examine some of these methods of drawing targeted website traffic in more detail. Discover all you can and start attracting those interested visitors to your web site.
