Do you know that there are so many options for electric dog collars today? At initial glance, it would be very easy for you to pick one. However, not all of them would be ideal.

When you are choosing electric dog collars, you may consider the following characteristics:

Adjustable Quick Fit Buckle System

Collars should fit the neck of your dogs perfectly. They must not be very loose that you pets can immediately lose them, with their constant running and playing, or tight that the collars may eventually break their necks. Moreover, dogs should never feel restricted when it comes to their head movements.

There are some charts online that will help you measure the neck size of your dog. You are then going to compare it with the size range of your chosen electric dog collar. Usually, the small ones can contain a neck size up to 16 inches. The much bigger versions are effective for those dogs that have neck sizes of more than 20 inches but not more than 28 inches.

Moreover, the collars must be very easy to adjust. Just in case you are planning to use the devices to the upcoming pooches or for a number of years, you must be able to conveniently change the neck size of the collars.

Specific Bark Detection System

Electric dog collars are used to not only detect but to also correct the barking sounds of your dogs. This means that if they bark, the collar will create a high-pitch sound that would force your pet to keep quiet and stop barking. Eventually, your dog would learn how to control his or her barks properly to avoid activating the sound or to reduce the frequency that he or she hears.

However, some collars are equipped with microphones, which are not efficient. This is because the collars can also “hear” other vibrations and barks besides those from your dog. Thus, the devices continue to produce ultrasonic waves, which can be very bothersome to your pet. Furthermore, he or she will not be able to really develop the relationship between his or her bark and the sound.

Waterproof and Durable Design

One of the greatest advantages of electric dog collars is their mobility. You can bring them anywhere you go—from beaches to camping trips. After all, dogs can wear them. You can also tuck them inside your bag or luggage.

But your dogs can be precious animals. They would sometimes find themselves submerged in water or engaged in very strenuous activities. You then need electric dog collars that do not easily wear out or get damaged by water.

Safety

Most of all, you need a collar that is very safe to use. You have to remember that the reason why your dogs are sporting it is not to punish them for your behavior. You want to discipline them. The sound created by the collars should not be too long. It should also not cause damage to the hearing of your pet.
