In the center of this great country there lies a state with beautiful rolling plains and bright blue skies. North Dakota is known for its spectacular landscape formed by pristine green prairie grass, fluffy white clouds amidst a perfect blue sky, and striking sculpted land of sandstone, shale, and clay. Many people come to the state every year to enjoy such scenery and many leave with a sense of awe and wonder at the beauty of the land. Here vacationers come to sit back and relax and get an idea of what it is like to live in all the glorious seclusion that North Dakota is.

Although North Dakota’s scenery is a big reason for visitors vacationing in the state many individuals come here to explore the state’s rich history as well. Before North Dakota was claimed by France in 1682 and bought by the United States in the famed Louisiana Purchase there was a number of Indian tribes that lived in the state. Visitors are able to come here and explore the cultures of the Mandan, Chippewa, Yankton Sioux, Hidatsa, Arikara, and Teton Sioux Indian tribes at various historical sites and museums throughout the state. And those individuals who visit the state at the right time of year even have the opportunity to experience the United Tribes International Powwow in the city of Bismarck where a true prospective on Indian culture can be gained. The famed Lewis and Clark expedition also took place in the state of North Dakota as well. Meriwether Lewis and William Clark were sent by President Thomas Jefferson to explore the newly United States owned territory and the two lived in North Dakota during the winter of 1804 – 1805. There is so much rich history to explore in North Dakota that you may find yourself needing to make a separate trip just to gain all of the knowledge of history that the state has to offer.

The scenery is another reason for many visitors coming to the state of North Dakota. A number of rivers run through the state and visitors are able to enjoy a variety of water sports and activities throughout the state. The rivers that call the state of North Dakota home include the Yellowstone River, the Missouri River, the Souris River, the Sheyenne River, the James River, the Heart River, and the Little Missouri River. The Red River and the Bois De Sioux River are also reachable from North Dakota as it separates the state from its neighbor Minnesota. For those that prefer the relaxation of the lake over the fast moving river there are a number of lakes to enjoy as well. Vacationers can visit such lakes as Lake Sakakawea, Long Lake, and Devils Lake and Lake Traverse which both have reservations as well. Many visitors come here to enjoy camping in the peaceful surroundings as well as swimming, boating, and fishing. And don’t forget the Fort Berthold, and the Standing Rock reservations either where visitors can get a glimpse of nature at its purest. Wherever you decide to visit in North Dakota you’re sure to find yourself wishing you have more time to spend here.
