Every parent knows that getting the kids ready to go back to school after a long summer takes a bit of patience and diligence. Kids often have trouble giving up the long, fun days of summer and parents often don't realize how fast the school year is coming upon them. There are a number of things that you, as a parent, can do to prepare both yourself and your children for the new school year. Preparing ahead of time will make the transition much easier for everyone and get the kids started of on the right foot so that they can continue their education.

The first thing you want to do is get the kids excited about going back to school. Remind them of all the friends they will see, the fun field trips they'll go on, and the exciting projects they will complete throughout the year. And don't forget the book fairs, and holiday parties that come along with the school year as well. Reminding the kids of all the fun aspects of school will get them thinking about how much they have missed during the summer months.

Next you will want to get the kids used to getting up early again. With summer came lazy mornings and late nights but its time to break out the alarm clocks and get back on schedule again. Start by having your kids go to bed at an earlier time for a week or so in August before beginning to get them up at an earlier time as well. By the end of August your children should be going to bed at their school bedtime and should be rested enough to be getting up in time to get ready for school. This will make the transition much easy for you and your children.

Next you will want to begin to adjust your own schedule as well as your children's in order to make more family time and more time to relax and prepare mentally for school days to come. You shouldn't pack in appointments so that you are all rushing around all day long with little time to do other things such as enjoy dinner with the family, have time to do homework, and handles chores at home. If everybody is worn out it will be much harder to get back on a school schedule.

You don't want to rush around at the end of summer gathering all of the necessities for school either. You should shop for school supplies and clothing early on so that you can have everything packed where it's supposed to be and ready to go by the first day of school. Waiting until the last minute not only causes stress for you but your children as well. Children will feel much more comfortable knowing that they have everything they need well before the beginning of the school year.

Ensuring that kids are prepared for school will ensure an easy transition from summer to school year for both you as well as your children and there is no better chance to start preparing than right now.
