I hope you like to make list and gather information because it is now time to find the most available places to play college golf. This potential scholarship list will depend on the quality of golf that your junior golfer is playing now and their potential for improvement in the near future.

This list should start once they are in high school and be tracked throughout their high school career. Why, because you will want to begin to communicate with college coaches. The climate in college golf can change drastically and you want to begin to build a relationship with the coaches just in case. You never know when they might move on to another program or disappear from the college landscape altogether. Your list will be an organism that moves and grows during this process.

Ok, lets assume that your junior golfer is ranked in the middle of the pack for their graduating class. You can look at their overall ranking, however their graduating class ranking is what you need to try and improve. That is for another article, lets stay focused on building your potential scholarship list.

Golfweek has a list ranking every division in college golf. We will focus on division one for this exercise. Since your junior golfer is not ranked in the top of their graduating class you can eliminate the top 50 schools in the country. Compare your junior golfers scoring average against the schools in the second 50 and up until you get a close match. Now you are ready to begin your list.

Let's say that the appropriate starting place in the number 51st ranked school in the country. Begin looking at the schools and eliminating the ones that don't fit your profile until you get down to a reasonable number. I would suggest that you begin your list with about 50 schools and then work your way down to a number around 30. Here is a sample criterion that you may want to consider to begin the elimination process.

* Distance from home * Climate * Public/Private Institution * Educational Cost * Degree Plan

Now here comes the time consuming part. Take your list of 30 schools and go to the athletic website for each school. You can get a rough estimate for how many scholarships will be available when your junior golfer graduates by comparing their year in school and the number of golfers on the schools roster at the same level. So if your junior golfer were a freshman then you would look to see how many freshmen are on the schools roster. You see that is the class that is graduating college the same time your junior golfer is graduating high school.

Look for schools that have a large number of scholarships available. I used three scholarships as my filter when we were working on our list and we still ended up with around twenty schools.

By the way, while you are on the schools site get the coaches name and contact information and add it to your list. You are going to need it. We will talk soon on how to use this list. Feel free to contact me with any questions that you may have at this time.
