Many renters often run into problems with their landlords. It’s a common problem. Most of the disputes erupt when the tenant is moving out. Often times the problem for renters is getting their security deposit back.

It can be a frustrating experience. Money is involved and emotions can turn to anger. This is why disputes between renters and landlords can often end up in court.

If you are a renter, it is important to know your tenant rights. Knowing your tenant rights can swing the leverage over to your side during a dispute with your landlord.

With the case of getting your security deposit back, most states require the landlord to return your funds within 30 days. If it has gone past 30 days and you have not received your security deposit back, then the landlord may be required to pay up to 3 times the amount of the deposit back to you.

You see, landlords are held to strict guidelines when it comes to security deposits. They must provide you with an itemized list of any deductions. You can ask for receipts for those deductions as well.

These types of disputes can turn into a full blown emotional battle. Small claims court may become a viable option to turn to, in order to solve the dispute with your landlord. As a renter, it’s critical to know and understand your tenant rights in order to win the dispute.

You do not want to get taken advantage of. Knowing and understanding your tenant rights can prevent landlords from taking you for a ride.

The landlord will often need to spruce up the property and get it show-able for the next renter. This can be expensive. The landlord is stuck in a financial situation where he or she has to pay back your security deposit, pay to spruce up the place and maybe even pay mortgage for a month or so.

Don’t let the landlord’s cost for doing business prevent you from receiving your security deposit back. Know your tenant rights and confront your landlord about your renters rights, and returning you your deposit.

Security deposits are only one of the many disputes that arise between tenants and landlords. Other problems include; braking your lease, personal security, evictions, late rent, repairs, pest control, and so on.

With any dispute you may have with your landlord, it’s important to understand that you have legal tenant rights that protect you in such matters. Be proactive and understand what these rights are. Knowing your tenant rights can save you a lot of time, money and emotional frustration.
