Ionic Breeze Air purifiers have sparked a great deal of controversy recently, and rightfully so. Many of the units do not clean a lot of the allergens out of the air. They also release high levels of ozone into the air that can be harmful to those who have pre-existing breathing problems. Is that enough to keep me from using mine? Definitely not. Why? I examined both sides of the story before making my informed decision.

So what exactly is ozone anyway?

Ozone is a simple molecule that consists of three parts oxygen. It occurs naturally in our atmosphere and helps shield us from the sun’s ultraviolet rays that can cause skin cancer. Ozone also happens naturally when lightning strikes. Minute amounts of the gas are released and have a bleach like odour. Large amounts of ozone can be harmful to the respiratory system, but small amounts give the air a nice fresh scent.

There are two main issues that were raised about Ionic Breeze Air Purifiers: Firstly that they gave off too high of levels of ozone; secondly that they did not filter out the allergens well enough. This was true for some, but definitely not all of the air purifiers. Many of the air purifiers filtered the air quite well and did not give off too much ozone. The main thing to look for to filter out the allergens from the air is a HEPA filter.

Can you tell me what a HEPA filter is?

HEPA stands for “High Efficiency Particulate Air”. A HEPA filter filters the allergen particles out of the air with high efficiency. They are usually composed of fibreglass and are tightly fitted together with minute spaces between the fibres. The tiny spaces that separate the fibres allow air to pass, but trap most of the airborne particles and allergens.

Should I buy an Ionic Breeze Air Purifier?

I own an Ionic Breeze Air Purifier that has a HEPA filter and would definitely recommend it (those who have breathing difficulties should talk with a physician before deciding whether to purchase one or not). The HEPA filter cleans the air very well, and the small levels of ozone give our home a fresh smell. After running the air purifier for a while, I find the clothes in the closet smell like when they just came in off the clothesline. The fresh smell only comes with the Ionizing air purifiers that produce ozone..

What should I be looking for in an air purifier?

You should definitely look for an air purifier that has a HEPA. There are many other filters available, but the HEPA filter is well known and respected as one of the best on the market.

Also don’t forget to check the levels of ozone that your air purifier emits. A small amount of ozone gives your home a nice outdoor fresh scent. Too much ozone can be harmful for those who have troubles with their breathing. If the packaging does not tell you and the store workers don’t know the details, go home and check the internet. Look at the consumer reviews and studies on the product you are considering purchasing.

Finally, make sure the air purifier is large enough for the area you want to use it in. Air purifiers come in all shapes and sizes. Read the packaging to see if the one you are looking at will suit your needs.
