The acai berry is a fruit of the acai palm tree, which natively grows in some parts of South and Central America, but which is increasingly spreading to other parts of the world where it is grown on a commercial basis.

There has been a lot of interest around the acai berry in recent days, as a result of a great variety of health benefits that the acai berry is said to have, and to confer to the people who get to use it.

These benefits of the acai berry are truly amazing, impacting positively on all systems of the body as they are said to do. Starting with the gastro-intestinal system, for instance, the acai berry is said to improve digestion greatly, doing away with most of the common digestive complaints like constipation. Turning to the circulatory system, the acai berry is said to help (in the long run) with heart health, by among other things reducing bad cholesterol levels in the body, while giving the user higher energy levels in the short run. Looking at the reproductive system, we have the acai berry being said to improve the sexual performance of its users (thanks to the effect it has on it user’s energy levels and libido.) In addition to all these, the acai berry is also said to improve with the skin appearance of its users, mainly thanks to its high anti-oxidant levels, while also obliterating some of the less flattering effects of age on its users; in effect making it an anti-aging aid.

Obviously a product that is said to have all these benefits would be bound to be very attractive, and the Acai berry is no exception. Demand for it has been on an upward trend in recent years, with a strong industry built around Acai berry supplements coming up, and already turning in revenues running into millions of dollars, fast approaching the billion mark.

The acai berry has, however, not been without controversy. There are people, and not just ordinary people, but experts, who have expressed the opinion that the acai berry is not all that it is made out to be. Indeed, while most commentators on this subject have been modest with their use of words, there are some who have come out openly saying that the acai berry is ‘just another berry’ – and that it doesn’t deliver on what it promises. This has obviously led to a controversy, with the people who swear by the efficacy of the acai berry on the one side, and the people who doubt it on the other hand.

It is hard to stand on one side of the acai berry controversy and claim to be objective. But what we can conclude about the acai berry, going by the evidence on the ground at least, is that it has to be worth something (in terms of unique benefits). Otherwise people wouldn’t continue pumping their often hard earned money into it; especially seeing that most buyers of acai berry products tend to be ‘repeat customers’ rather than people who are buying them for the first time.
