Your eye is one of the most important organs in the body. The sad thing is that as you age, the quality of your eyesight will start to diminish. Worse, you can suffer from all sorts of eye-related diseases, such as macular degeneration and cataract.

You don’t have to go through all these, though. There are ways on how you can still maintain your 20/20 vision even if you’re already on your fifties or more than that. You can look for supplements that are enriched with the following:

Broccoli

You can find this in vegetable-based health supplements. Broccoli contains sulphoraphane, which helps eliminate the presence of free radicals in the body. Thus, you have enough capacity to prevent infection that can damage your eyes. It can also protect the retina of your eyes from going through an oxidation process.

Zeaxanthin

This usually works together with lutein. It plays a huge role in vision protection since it protects your macula from being damaged by the harmful UV rays of the sun. You can think of it as your own sunglasses whenever you decide to go outdoors. Moreover, like broccoli, it is a powerful antioxidant.

Lutein

Based on a study conducted for six years, it has been found out that along with zeaxanthin, lutein can help protect the eyes from blindness and macular degeneration, which affects more than a million of Americans. The disease is also extremely harmful for both men and women who are already sixty-five years old.

You can get lutein from green and leafy vegetables. These include swiss chard, Brussels sprouts, zucchini, garden, and romaine lettuce. However, if you are not an avid vegetable eater or you cannot meet the daily requirement of 5 to 7 servings of vegetables and fruits every day, you can take supplements that are rich in lutein.

Glutathione

Glutathione is the latest rave today. It is used in soap manufacturing since it has the ability to whiten the skin. Nevertheless, this is just the good side effect of the antioxidant. Its main use is to increase your body’s ability to fight off free radicals. It is also known to prevent the eyes from damage. Glutathione is well used by the body. It can stay inside your body and be utilized by your cells up to 5 days.

Vitamin B12

Vitamin B12 is just one of the many B vitamins, which are highly essential in the body. If you lack any of them, you can suffer from diseases, including life threatening ones. In fact, B17 is showing promise as a powerful way of controlling, preventing, or even treating cancer.

Vitamin B12 can improve the condition of your brain, such as your memory retention and critical thinking. It will also promote the formation of blood, the life source of your body. What you don’t know, however, is that it is also recommended for people who want to protect their eyes from vision problems.

You need around 500 mcg of vitamin B12 every day. Since it is quite difficult to be absorbed by the body, you may have to search for those that can be taken through tongue, or you can look for a physician who can give you with injections.
