In Part 1 of 3, we saw how specializing as a copywriter can mean setting yourself apart from the competition and increasing your business. In part 2 of 3, we pick up where we left off by exploring how specializing as a copywriter can shape your business to suit you best by increasing your pay and attracting more of the work you prefer.

DOES YOUR BUSINESS FIT YOU?

When I asked Amy Sorkin Kurland, copywriter and owner of Amy's Words (http://www.amyswords.com), for a quote about specializing as a copywriter, I didn't realize she'd basically write Part 2 of 3 for me. Just listen:

"When starting your business, the question should not be 'who's going to hire me,' as much as 'who do I want to be working for?' Which industries appeal to you? Which will pay the most? This last question is key because your goal should not be just to write for pay, but to make a living from writing."

Wow! That kind of thinking is what gives you a personally tailored business. When was the last time we asked ourselves who WE wanted to be working for? Or which industries appeal to US? We're freelancers, after all. Let's not forget that "free" part.

Am I suggesting you simply use specialization as an excuse for not doing the kinds of work that don't interest you? Yes, I am.

Can you do that as a freelance copywriter? Yes, you can.

AND THEN THERE'S THE MONEY

That's right. You can also use specialization as an excuse for doing the kinds of copywriting work that make you more money. Let's revisit Amy's words on the subject of choosing one industry over another:

"Which will pay the most? This last question is key because your goal should not be just to write for pay, but to make a living from writing."

Again, wow! We're not just talking about choosing the work we most enjoy and getting paid to do it, but also getting paid well to do it.
