There is a new treatment called "Lipo-Dissolve." It involves injecting a drug called Lipostabil into problem areas to dissolve fat and take off inches. There is no downtime and no apparent side effects, other than initial swelling and bruising. Patients get the shots on their lunch breaks and return to work. Many even call it, the “Lunch Break Liposuction”.

It's not a replacement for liposuction, because it only minimizes small amounts of fat. It's perfect for the person who wants to lose that last five pounds or get rid of the armpit chub that hangs out of tank tops. You get a few injections, and you're thinner in weeks.

That's the good news. The bad news? Lipostabil was not developed as a spot reducer and has not been submitted to the Food and Drug Administration for approval. Regardless, patients of both genders are clamoring for it. After testing the procedure on a few eager guinea pigs-- women who wanted to get rid of fat pads under their eyes, saddlebags, and double chins, plastic surgeons officially added LipoDissolve to their menu a few months later. Since then, LipoDissolve has bad a growing demand every since.
According to Patricia Rittes, M.D., the Brazilian dermatologist, the drug is safe. The active ingredient in it is phosphatidylcholine, a naturally occurring substance in the body first used in the '50s to reduce cholesterol and triglyceride levels in the blood. Lipostabil is manufactured by Aventis, a multibillion-dollar pharmaceutical company based in Strasbourg, France.

According to a spokesperson, it has been approved for use in South Africa, Brazil, Italy, and Germany as a lipid-lowering agent for patients with certain coronary disorders-not for shrinking love handles. Aventis has no immediate plans to apply for FDA approval of the drug in the U.S.

It would cost $2000 and require three visits. The price varies depending on the area treated, as does the number of visits. The appointments are spaced over several weeks because the medication stays in your system for 15 days

The off-label use of the drug in Brazil started in 1995 to diminish fat pads under the eyes. Now LipoDissolve is done on abdomens, arms, thighs, hips, even necks. In weeks, fat just disappears! I do about 60 women a month." She says she has never had a problem or complaint. When questioned about if we should be worried about the lack of FDA approval, the concern was brushed. "Look at Botox," she says. "Doctors have used it since 1987, and it was only approved [for cosmetic use] in the U.S. this year. This drug is made by a major international company, it’s not made in someone's basement.

Lipostabil does make a difference. It's subtle," she says, "but I can see it, and I definitely look better because of it." Other women who have tried LipoDissolve are equally enthusiastic. A 30-year-old fashion publicist let LipoDisoolve target her triceps. "I have always hated the fat in the back of my arms, but I was a bit scared of surgery," she says. "I lost an inch on each arm!"
