When people think of a humidifier, they often think of something that will make the home a little more pleasant. A humidifier is often seen as an extra that can be done without, even a luxury.

In fact nothing could be further from the truth. First thing you need to realize is that times have changed. Modern technology has changed the way we live, and a humidifier is becoming more and more of a necessity. No-one would think of having a house without heating.

And pretty soon, few people will think of having a house without a humidifier. And the two things are extremely interrelated.

This is because modern heating systems produce what can be called "dry heat". In the old days, when people heated their houses by fires or stoves, much moisture remained in the air. But the highly-efficient modern systems, though they keep the house or apartment extremely warm and comfortable, also have a downside. The dry heat they produce can play havoc with people and the house itself.

Those with skin conditions such as eczema, for instance, may often find the skin becoming worse in winter due to spending much time in dry air caused by heating systems being on full blast. The hair may also become dry. Even if the skin condition is not particularly bad, the dryness caused by the heating system can make the skin feel tight and stretched, all leading to a feeling of discomfort in the home.

And the home itself may also suffer. The lack of moisture, or humidity, means that the air pulls moisture from anything it can find, including wooden fittings. Cracked wooden panels, peeling wallpaper, and cracks in wooden furniture are all signs that the air has become too dry, and the home is badly in need of a humidifier.

The good news is that humidifier technology has improved greatly in recent years, with an ever-increasing number of models coming onto the market. These humidifiers range from a compact table-top model to a humidifier large enough to humidify the whole house. Humidifiers can provide warm or cool air, depending on your preference. Many humidifiers also have sophisticated features such as auto shut-off and hygrometers to measure the humidity of the air.

Once you have experienced the comfort brought to your home by a high-quality humidifier, you’ll understand why a humidifier is fast becoming an essential part of the home. Just like a modern heating system, the humidifier may one day become standard.

Many skin complaints are aggravated by the dry heat of modern heating systems.

A humidifier can help to balance the equation.
