Many of you may dread having to come up with a fun theme for a kid's room let alone redecorate it with just the right colors. Here's some helpful color wheel tips that will take the angst out of decorating and quick way to color your child's world.

Color 101
Step 1. Choose your color scheme by selecting two complementary colors.

Complementary Colors
Definition: Complementary colors are directly opposite each other on the color wheel.
Function: They can act as a way to embellish each other making a striking color presentation.
Example: Violet complements yellow or red complements green. Use these types of colors to create drama in a room. What works beautifully is yellow wall paint with a violet bed spread or curtains.

Step 2. Choose if neutral colors if there are to be any.

Neutral Colors
Definition: Neutral colors are grays, blacks, whites, or beiges.
Function: To separate or distinguish without detracting from your basic color theme. Can also be effectively used as an accent.
Example: Neutral-colored walls provide a background that doesn't over power the color of the furniture or wall hangings, etc. Keep in mind many contemporary rooms have been successfully designed in using only neutrals.

Step 3. Choose shades of your chosen complementary colors.

Shades of Complementary Colors
Definition: Shades can be either lighter or darker tones of the chosen complementary colors.
Function: Using various shades of your chosen complementary colors can turn a dramatic room into a myriad of subtle shades. Example: If you choose yellow and violet, try adding a pale violet comforter with a deep violet pillow sham. Even a soft yellow decorative throw pillow will create an eye-catching spark.

There are many others ways to decorate a room with color like using three colors called a split complementary or triadic. Remember keep it simple with just two colors and one neutral. Most important don't be afraid of color - experiment with it.
