I don’t know where I first heard that window tinting was illegal but I know that it was in grade school around 5th or 6th grade. The crazy thing is that I don’t know if it is really true still. So what I am going to do for this article is do a little google research and see if I can find any convincing evidence for or against this rumor. This will settle the debate that has been raging in my head for a good 15 years or so anyway. If that doesn’t take up enough room I will try to find out if there are a list of pros and cons to darkening the windows and/or windshield (do they do that?) on the care of your choice.

So I do the search right and there 56,400 results for “window tinting illegal.” The very first result is called “tint laws.” Perfect right? Well it seems that there are actually laws that very specifically lay out the type and location of the tinting that is and is not allowed on a vehicle. So I live in Omaha, Nebraska right? If you haven’t been, we are the hippest car and driver types to ever hop in a low rider to push the button so the ass drops (if you know what I’m saying). Any way I go to the section that details the laws that apply to Nebraska…

Here is what I found: AS-1 / 35% Film / 20% Film / 20% Film / 199x. Now let me explain what this means first the key to the order that each specification details is: Windshield / Front Side Windows / Rear Side Windows / Rear-Back Window / Year Passed. So now let me explain the % film and all that. So the windshield there is a mark that says “AS-1.” Basically window tinting cannot go below this mark. Moving on, on the front side windows the tint “film” that is allowed must pass at least 35% of the visible light spectrum. The film on the rear side windows must past at least 20% of the visible light. The rear-back window tinting film must also pass at least 20% of visible light. This law was passed some time in the 1990s. Something to realize is that mirrored tint is generally prohibited everywhere in the US.

So what do you know? I was right all these years! At least partially anyway. So you know what I am about to do? Well I am about to hop in my ride and roll over to Ed’s window tinting and have them lay some beautiful black all over my precious lenses and then I will be able to roll to the beat of bouncing bass while looking at people that will only be able to imagine how cool I must be.
