As a society, we are constantly reminded of the dangers of second-hand smoke – especially to our children’s health. But did you know that traditional paraffin candles also pose a health risk to your kids’ lungs? I was shocked to learn that these candles introduce pollutants and sometimes even carcinogens into your home. Most consumers aren’t aware of candle ingredients and most candles, unless they’re labeled to the contrary, are manufactured using paraffin wax. One reason for our ignorance is that candle makers are not required to list ingredients on their candles. Even when they are listed, they are often worded in such a way as to mislead the purchaser into believing they are purchasing healthy candles when, in fact, the candle is mostly petroleum wax.

Paraffin wax is made from petroleum wastes which have been bleached with harmful chemical agents. Paraffin wax has long been popular for candle making because it’s cheap and relatively easy to work with when creating candles. The ugly reality is that it also produces smoke and soot and, according to the EPA, releases carcinogens such as benzene and toluene as well as other toxic substances into your home when burned. Amazingly enough, these hazards are not required to be disclosed on candle warning labels.

If you’re like me and really enjoy the aroma and ambience of jar candles, what can you do to protect your family from the obvious dangers that paraffin poses? Be assured that there are safe solutions available to you. One of the most popular alternatives today is soy wax. Made of wax produced from soy beans, these candles burn cleaner than paraffin wax candles, emit almost no soot and are a renewable resource. The use of soy wax also supports the American farmer which adds to its attractiveness for many environmentally friendly consumers. Soy candles burn cooler and longer, and produce no known carcinogens, which make them a better value for the money than similar-sized paraffin candles.

The next time you’re in the market to purchase candles, whether they’re for your home or as a gift for someone else, please make choices that will keep the indoor air quality safe for humans and pets. Check the label carefully and if there’s no mention that the candles contain soy wax, keep shopping until you happen upon labels that do state that the candles are made from soy. You’ll be doing yourself and your family a huge favor. After all, if you wouldn’t want your children breathing second-hand smoke, why on earth would you want them breathing the fumes from a paraffin candle?
