The Intelligent Designing or Basic Design Guidelines are related to the creation of media and site products. For that, you are to learn some very basic things about it. You can learn a lot and can improve your ability to make appealing and intelligent creations in the following areas.

1. Lining Things Up
2. Using Variation
3. Giving Breathing Room
4. Using the Grid
5. The Golden Section
6. Lining Things Up

It looks good when you line up things. Things scattered all over do not look nice. But you are to know which one to line up. Here are some guidelines. Generally speaking, straight or smooth lines look good. Uneven or inconsistent lines do not look good. Sometimes a nice contrast can be made by aligning different elements. However, starting with things that line up is good for the beginners.

There are innumerable examples of line segments like roads, desks, walls, buildings, orange juice containers etc. All these objects are straight and consistent looking. Any change or diversion will add odd to the shape. Life is at risk on road if it is not properly lined. When turning comes abruptly, accidents occur regularly. A slight change in the curvature causes unprecedented and irreparable damage. A road barrier prevents a driver from viewing the whole turn.

If we look at other things like desks, it is completely straight. It is good for writing. It fits well against straight walls and looks nice. Buildings too have convenient shapes for space efficiency. At some instances, the curved buildings too look beautiful. Yet they are often very even. Often the curve is accompanied by a straight line in another dimension e.g. the orange juice in little square boxes. A long rectangle box makes a good marketing. Containers having crumpled or dented lines are of little demand. You won’t be tempted to buy that carton. The benefits or utility mostly depend on alignments be it straight or evenly curved lines. If we pay our attention to the nature, we will see the innumerable examples of straight lines. Trees are basically straight lines. Trunks of redwood trees go to the same direction with remarkable consistency. There is a competition to grow high up in search of sunlight.

Line up the straight lines for your designs. Line up image edges with other image edges and lines. Line up texts with texts and other elements with same nature. This is a fundamental principle of designing.

Variations add design. That is why simply line up outlook is boring. Straight long roads with no turns are quite boring. In the same way, if everything lines up on the same line in the web sites, the page will look very boring. Better you change it with some variations like bold titles, lists of items, and indented text.

Such variations will break up the monotony of straight lines and can add value to a design. However, with innumerable breaking or inconsistency, the design can be odd looking as line up things sometimes look monotonous. If you put texts one at the edge of another, it will have a claustrophobic look. Some sites have lots of information on one page but no proper margin or breathing space between elements. The result is negative. That is why it is expected to have text margins, frames or room to breathe.

It is important to use graph papers to help you line up things. Draw a measured grid. However, in the final design you can remove this grid. You can use it in the layout to ensure things being lined up nicely. The professional designers use an imaginary grid without having it displayed in the design.

The golden section is an important part of the basic designing. It is nothing but the golden ratio or the divine proportion. If you deal with math, you can learn it better. The golden section is nothing more than a third. To make a picture look good, the golden section is a little more than two third of the sky. The same rule applies to others compositions. It has some relation to basic geometry. It seems to vibrate with the sense of beauty.
