Many experts recommend that you treat twins as two individuals, and this advice applies when choosing their names. However, many parents of twins like names that go together and if you want to go down this route here are a few suggestions.

First, the rules for choosing baby names apply to twins too: make sure the first name goes with the surname, and check the initials don’t spell out something you and your baby will regret later. Second, choose something sensible. I know the fashion is to give your baby a unique name, or a traditional name with an unusual spelling; but don’t carried away. A little while ago I met twins called Mercedes and Porche. One was a girl but I have no idea which one! It is true that bringing up two kids will probably cost as much as two luxury cars, and maybe Daddy would prefer the cars, but is it really fair on the children to give them names like that?

OK, now to the suggestions.

Names with the same meanings:

Sadie, Sarah and Zara - all mean ‘Princess’
Saffron, Yasmin/Jasmine and Rosie – are all flowers
Tasmin and Tammy – both mean ‘Twins’
Phoebe and Lucy – both mean ‘Light’
Kieran, Melanie and Darcy – all mean ‘Dark’ and could go well with Phoebe and Lucy (Light)
Alan and Kevin – both mean ‘Handsome’
Brian and Carl – both mean ‘Strong’
Cheryl and Chastity – both mean ‘Dear’
Zoe, Eve and Evie – all mean ‘Life’
Eloise and Quinn – both mean ‘Wise’
Sian, Shona, Sinead, Siobhan, Joanne(a), Jack and Ian – all mean ‘God has been gracious’.
Mia, Mariah and Marianne – all mean ‘Wished for child’
Archie and Patrick – both mean ‘Noble’

Anagrams
Amy and May
Nadia and Aidan
Myra and Mary

Finally, please try to avoid the puns. I used to work with a very nice lady called Hazel Nutt. Naturally, whenever anyone was introduced to her there was laughter. Fortunately she had the strength of character to put up with it, but some wouldn’t; like an Irish lad I knew whose middle name was Mary. It all came out when he had to fill in a job application. He was not able to laugh with everyone else and it even affected the way he felt about his parents.
