So many MLB baseball bettors walk up to the sportsbook counter (or log in online) without knowing too much of anything about the teams they are going to bet on. Sure, they know the starting pitching and some general mass media info, but they are largely under informed. It's no wonder that sportsbooks continue to pile in the money day after day.

Here's a simple question for you. Do you know how many innings the bullpen has worked over the past three games for the team you are about to bet on? If not, you are under informed. That's just one of many aspects the winning baseball sports bettor needs to know. I'm not saying that you need to spend 10 hours on one game diving into every last little nuance of the contest, but you should know some basics that will possible affect the game.

What follows is a short list of questions that must be answered for the typical baseball game. If you find yourself making a bet without being able to answer these questions, you are under informed. All baseball bettors that want to win over the long term need to be able to gain a grasp a basic concept of game play. You have to think less like someone just watching balls and strikes and more like a manager. Start by answering these basic questions.

1. How many innings has the bullpen worked in the past few games?
2. Have the better pitchers in the bullpen pitched in the past day or two?
3. How many outings, on average, will each starting pitcher go tonight if they have an average performance?
4. Are there any players fighting injury, colds or personal problems?
5. Has the team been under or over performing in the past week? How about this series?
6. How do the pitchers generally do verses the hitters (not the team itself) they will face?
7. Is the closer being overworked of late or is he ready to go if a save situation presents itself?

There's seven solid questions you should know the answers to before making any baseball wager. By answering them, you will have a strong handle on the pitching situation and the excepted output of the game. You will also have a newfound ability to find value lines and games to stay away from—that might have previously looked good. It's not just information that's key; it's knowing what information to look at.
