You've been keeping your fingers to the grindstone and turning out reams of deathless prose when suddenly your mind goes blank or your ideas suddenly seem boring, run of the mill dreck or you suddenly can't figure out why on earth you sent Ashley into the haunted house in the middle of the night with no flashlight.

Fortunately, there is light at the end of this tunnel -- and it's NOT a ghost or an oncoming train!

Often writers get so focused on what they're writing that they get into a rut and the poor muse (who has been working her creative wiles to the bone) is simply out of gas. She needs a refill. Fortunately, the closest filling station is your local mall, café or park.

The best thing you can do is grab a notebook and pen and walk to someplace nearby where you can sit for as long as you want. It doesn't matter if there are a lot of people or just ducks. it doesn't matter if it's the food court at the mall, a park bench, a table at your favorite coffee or tea place, or even the local bar. All that matters is that you got up off your behind and started moving.

It's important not to bring something to read. Otherwise, that's what you'll do. Just a notebook and pen or pencil. Or laptop. But that's it. Get a beverage and maybe a snack and look around you.

This is what's important -- you can't leave until you fill at least one page of writing. And no fair writing in really big letters just to get yourself off the hook. Regular sized writing on a regular sized piece of paper (you get to pick the color of the paper).

Now pretend you are one of the characters in your story. Let's say her name is Sally. So now you're Sally and sitting at the table.

Here are some questions you can answer in writing:

Why is she there?

What does she see?

Using her voice, describe at least one person who's nearby.

Using her voice, describe the weather and the surroundings.
You could do this by having her write a letter, yakking on her cell phone, writing in her diary or just thinking. But whatever is going on in her mind, you should get down on paper.

It doesn't have to lead anywhere. You could simply use it as character development or background material or a separate short story. It doesn't matter.

What matters is that you moved. You got the energy moving again by simply getting up and out the door. You got the blood flowing so that your poor muse could get some much needed rest and refill her energy. And, best of all, you got something down on paper.

It doesn't get much better than that. So, the next time you feel like your writing is stagnating, get out, get moving and get writing.
