There are many benefits to having a carport. By building a carport, you can gain storage space. It also gives you a place to park your car where it can be out of the elements. Sun, rain, sleet, hail, and snow as well as other weather elements can cause a lot of damage to your car. When deciding what kind of carport you want to buy, there are a few things to take into consideration: Needs, Size, Cost, and Material.

The first thing you need to consider is what your needs are and what you are expecting from purchasing a carport. This is an important step. People often just go out and buy the cheapest or the biggest or the nicest carport they can find. The best carport is not determined by the manufacturer but by what your needs are. Don't make the mistake of buying simply what is the most popular. It's like buying a car: if you have a large family, you might consider a van or SUV, even if a motorcycle is cheaper or a sports car is more popular.

Next, consider how big you want to go with your carport. A bigger carport is going to give you more storage and more room to park your car or cars, but it will cost more. How many cars do you want to park in the carport? Are you planning on putting a small car or an RV? If you only need to park one car, you obviously don't need to buy a two-car carport. Keep in mind how much storage space you are going to want. A smaller carport is ideal if you plan to only park one car and don't need any storage.

Carports come in all shapes and sizes and range widely in cost. Cost depends on the manufacurer, the quality, the size, and the material. Determine what your budget is for your carport and work from there. With your budget in mind, begin to look at your needs you have previously determined. From here, start balancing things out. Maybe a bigger carport doesn't fit into your budget, but you can go with a cheaper material or a smaller carport. You can also buy a custom carport. These kits are easy do-it-yourself assembly using simple tools. This helps lower cost and lets you customize the carport to your needs.

Finally, you want to think about what material you want. Plastics are for the most part the most resistant to weathering. They are usually the cheapest as well. Metal carports are usually stronger but are prone to rust. Galvanized steel or aluminum is a good way to go to prevent rust. Wood is a good middle-ground. It is strong and doesn't rust. Wood is prone to mold and water damage, but if you keep wet rags and boxes away from the posts you should be fine.

You may also want to talk to your insurance agent and let them know about your new carport as it just may reduce your premiums for your car or cars as they will be very much more shielded from the nasty effects that nature can cough up.
