You’ve heard it tons of time – “Give to your local charity.” But have you ever wondered why you should worry about investing time and dollars into a neighborhood, national, or international organization? Below, we’ll look over a few of the reasons that so many people give to charity.

Tax Reasons

From a purely fiscal standpoint, giving to charity makes good sense. That’s because you can often “write off” the amounts you gave to charity on your tax forms. If you give enough to charity, that could wind up being substantial money in your pocket come April 15. Of course, you have to earn a certain amount to deduct your charity givings; ask your tax professional if you meet the requirements for this deduction.

Name-Dropping Reasons

It’s true – many people give to charity simply to get their names “out there.” Why do you think that so many of the wealthy persons give and give and give some more? Usually, they don’t donate anonymously. Instead, they “get” something out of it that is very tangible. For instance, charity given to construct a new music building at a college usually ends up with the structure being named for the givers.

Personal Reasons

Sometimes, it just feels good or right to give to a charity. After you send in your check or drop off your donation, you get a rush of goodwill. That feeling can last for days, weeks, or even months, and it’s the reason many people are overly generous (perhaps to a fault) with how much they’ll give to charities. There’s nothing wrong with this kind of giving, either; in fact, it’s wonderful to do something that helps others and brightens both your days!

Professional Reasons

Often, companies will engage in charity practices as a “team.” For instance, the United Way holds a “Day of Caring” each year. Basically, every U.W. chapter asks community workers to help them out for a morning or afternoon. Many businesses get involved in this kind of campaign as a team-building exercise for their employees. Plus, giving to this kind of charity does look good on the organization’s “record”. Finally, it gives employees a good feeling, like they work for a company that truly cares about the community in which it resides. That’s incredible important and can even have lucrative results for the business.

Familial Reasons

Many charities receive money and goods from people who have been touched by those charity’s missions. For instance, if a daughter lost a mother to breast cancer, she’s more likely to choose the American Cancer Society as her charity of choice, perhaps giving money or raising funds annually. This kind of charitable giving happens every day. Perhaps you have a charity that has personal ties, too?

Remember – there are tons of charities out there to choose from, so if one doesn’t suit you, find another. You’ll never regret the dollars, time, or items you gave to your favorite charity, and neither will the incredibly grateful recipients.
