There is a difference between the travel and tourist industry, just as there is a difference between going abroad to see large and ancient monuments and heading overseas to get an apartment and live for a few months. But then there is another gonzo travel category all of itself - extreme travel, a modus operandi only suitable for the most addicted of the road junkies.

What extreme travel isn't is luxury hotels, paid tours and $15 cocktails on white sand beaches - it's not those two slotted weeks you get as an American away from your corporate indenture. It’s not your khakis. Extreme travel is betting that all that matters in life is experience and transcending the status quo and then leaving home to seek the answers.

Extreme travelers don't have an itinerary. Usually they just purchase a one-way ticket and just go. They don't know where they're going to stay when they arrive - they're just planning to get out of the big city madness and hitch around until by word of mouth they find something interesting. Extreme travelers are not afraid of sleeping under the stars. Road junkies believe in human kindness.

Extreme travelers do not carry luggage. They carry a change of clothes, a toothbrush, a passport and an ATM card. The first thing they do when they get off the plane is start picking up the local slang. They learn accents. They talk to people. Extreme travelers visit a country and end up seeing it through the eyes of local people they’ve befriended. They’re not in a rush to get home.

Extreme travelers find out what they need to know and congregate at places like roadjunky.com. They don't need printed guidebooks. Extreme travelers can tell you where all the great parties are around the world. They don’t say no to life.
