There are many types of corrective eye surgery available for people today. However, it’s important to determine which one is right for you? Your condition and the treatment your doctor advises will best help determine what route you should go. If you have been diagnosed with an eye condition that requires corrective steps you may want to read up on your options so you can make the best educated decision that is right for you.

There are such treatments as Conductive Keratoplasty (CK), which uses mild heat on the periphery of the cornea to reduce collagen; the heat used is from radio waves. This is a very quick procedure lasting around 5 minutes. There is also a procedure where doctors can attach corrective lens right to the eye, Implantable Contact Lenses, helping to treat severe nearsightedness and farsightedness. There is also Intacs, which were mainly used to treat mild nearsightedness but are now mainly used to treat corneal bulging

Other forms of corrective eye surgery include such procedures as IOLs or Intraocular Lenses. This form of treatment has been around for decades and is generally implanted during cataract surgery, thus helping patients to see better at a distance. However, patients were still required to use glasses to see close up. Today, this procedure offers patients the ability to have a lens that moves or allows the patient to see at all levels (close, intermediate and at a distance) without the use of reading glasses.

LTK or Laser Thermal Keratoplasty, which uses mild heat from lasers, similar to CK, correcting farsightedness or presbyopia. This procedure takes only 3 minutes. There is also SEB’s or Scleral Expansion Bands, which are new implantation devices to treat presbyopia also. This procedure takes about 30 minutes and involves placing 4 PMMA segments just under the surface of the white part of the eye. This surgery is still in FDA investigational stages in the USA, so you will want to check with your doctor to see if it is fully approved before seeking this type of treatment.

There are many options and types of corrective eye surgeries. Knowing the facts and familiarizing yourself with the different procedures will help you make the best-educated choice. If you are unsure which is right for you, then check with your doctor and let him or her know your concerns. Your doctor would be more than happy to go over everything with you and help you feel comfortable in making the right choice.
