In my article “Do You Really Want A Business of Your Own,” I discussed questions that one should answer before beginning any business. The answers that you give should help determine if you are the entrepreneurial type.

Running a business can be difficult and it is time consuming. And there is the aspect of needing money to live on while the business is in the startup stage. So that brings me to the title of this article, ”Should I Start My Business Part Time?”

Some topics to consider when deciding between a full time and a part time business include the following:

· What benefits will you give up if you leave a full time job? These include having a regular paycheck, life and health insurance, retirement benefits such as 401k, pension, paid vacations, sick days, and any other benefit that your position offers.

· Can I still work at my present job while running my business or will operating my business interfere with my regular job? Sometimes, this may be hard to separate the two positions especially if there is a deadline at your new business.

· Is the business that I have chosen compatible with only working it part time? These businesses include working on the internet, home parties, bookkeeping, craft fairs, flea markets, etc.

· Will owning a part time business and working a full time job lead to mental and physical exhaustion? Sometimes you may not get enough rest and this can become a real problem.

One other aspect of operating a part time business is being fair to your present employer. There may be times that you need to be away from your present position in order to take care of something in your business. What does your employer do? Perhaps, there are other employees that can handle your position but this also might put your employer in a bind. And, if this happens too often, your employer may be forced to hire someone else to fill your position. Be realistic; if you own a part time business and it interferes with your present job, it will not interfere for long. Your employer will be forced to find another employee and let you go.

Be Patient. It may take a long time to see a profit in your business. And a part time business will usually receive part time income. However, there are usually several advantages to owning a part time business.

· Generally, you work out of your home. This saves money from having to lease property, pay extra utility bills, deal with landlords, etc.

· You are not away from your family as much as if you owned a full time business.

· You can work the hours that you want, dressed the way that you want, and wherever you want. This freedom is worth a lot of money by itself.

· There is no bureaucracy to fight with; you make the decisions about all of the aspects of your business. However, on the flip side of this is the fact that if something is wrong, it is your fault. No one else to blame.

As with any decision that you make in life, there are pros and cons. Starting a part time business is no exception. First you must decide if you really want a business, then you must choose what type of business and, finally, you must decide whether you want to start as a part time business or jump right in and begin a full time business.

These decisions are just the beginning. Every day in your business, hundreds of choices must be made. From the mundane to the challenging, it is your responsibility to make these choices because now you can say I am a business owner.
