This could be considered the best example of modern irony. Computers are absolutely everywhere these days and are considered an essential part of many people’s lives. They are needed as a way of keeping our information organized, our lives structured and jobs efficient.

Things become ironic when we realize just how disorderly our actual computers are kept.

With so many peripherals to worry about it’s no wonder so many of us consider the computer’s space to be one of the messiest spaces in our home. In most offices things are probably just as bad if not worse. The monitor has to have a home, as does the tower and the printer. Then there is a keyboard and a mouse. Once that’s all setup there are cables running in all directions. With all of that clutter where do you keep blank media? Extra software? What about the non-computer related things we need like our notepads, pens and even that telephone?

Basically, this becomes one big bunch of clutter that makes for an unwelcoming environment. The only way to solve this problem is to get a desk that meets your needs. And what are your needs? To keep all of your hardware spaced out, organized and accessible while allowing you room to do everything else you have to do.

The problem is that everyone has different types of hardware and different needs surrounding that hardware. This means that there is no such thing as a perfect desk. This makes things difficult because, unlike buying a computer, you can’t just measure a desk with things like speed and capacity.

What seems to work best is to follow a few simple steps. First, determine where the desk will go. The overall look of a desk will depend on whether it’s going in the office, bedroom, family room etc. Then narrow down the ones that will house all of your hardware. Lastly, all you can really do from here is to sit down in a few of them and imagine yourself working away. What is it you do there? What things will you need to store there?

The ideal is to have a setup that will keep everything organized while still maintaining a descent working space. Of course, you also want to make sure the desk will fit!
