It can feel like the world is ending when you're combating depression. Seeing a shrink or taking medication may not be the way you thought you would manage your life.

Think calm thoughts, don't clench your teeth, and slowly relax the jaw. When you are under a heavy load of stress, your whole body feels it, but it's especially felt in your jaw. It's helpful to use your index finger to touch your jaw, clench it, take a deep breath, and then release your jaw as you exhale. You should feel an immediate release of tension.

Don't just accept depressive thinking. If you are thinking something about yourself, consider if you'd ever make that statement about another person. When you realize you wouldn't say that about another person, why would you say it about yourself? Reframe thoughts in your own head by thinking of positive things you can do to help yourself eliminate the problem.

Come up with your own personal affirmation, a brief, encouraging statement that allows you to focus on positive thoughts. Repeat your affirmation when you are feeling overwhelmed, to give yourself the courage and strength you need to forge ahead. Keep reminding yourself that you are strong enough to handle this and to just calm down. Choose whatever will make you feel better.

Get your exercise daily. There have been studies that show if you work out for thirty minutes each day, depression will lessen. In truth, a good workout itself is just as good for you as a prescription drug. Using the stair and walking to the store can be great ways to increase your activity and appreciation of the world around you.

A great way to relieve stress is to exercise and get yourself active. Although not a perfect solution, it will alleviate immediate stress, reduce physical tension and if you make it a regular part of your life, can really provide you with a positive activity to keep looking forward to. This not only helps relieve stress, it also gives a person a self confidence boost, as well as a handle on their life.

A warm bath can be a soothing experience if you're feeling depressed. Soaking in the tub while reading, listening to music, or even resting your eyes will soothe the body and spirit. Warm water will help to relax you even more, as the soothing temperatures will ease your muscles as well.

Being around animals can be relaxing. Studies have shown that simply sitting with a pet for a little while can significantly lower your stress.

Do not use the words "depression" or "depressed" in your vocabulary. These words are very real, but they have many negative connotations attached and can worsen any feelings of hopelessness. It can be more helpful to approach your feelings as simply a period when your mood is low. When you think about fighting off depression, it may seem impossible. Instead, think about elevating your mood.

Writing about your stress can be a powerful strategy to reduce the anxiety of stressful situations. In life there are often situations which cause a lot of stress, but which are not easier to talk about with others. In these situations, writing can provide a confidential outlet for your worries. Keep all this information in a diary so whenever you want to know how you handled a previous stressful situation, the helpful information is available.

A medical professional should be involved in helping you overcome depression, whether the condition is clinical or not. Only a doctor can give you the right diagnosis and prescribe a medication if you need it. These professionals can also narrow down the DSM-IV-R diagnosis for the depression you are experiencing based on the symptoms.

If you search out the root of the stress causing problems in your life, you will be able to get rid of them and feel much better. For example, if you've got a comrade that creates stressful situations for you, you may want to stay far away from that person. Getting rid of stress sources can incredibly improve both your health and attitude.

Sometimes, just talking to a trusted friend, who is also a good listener, is an effective way to let go of stress. Letting all those emotions and anxieties out will help you to feel a lot better. Choose a relative or a friend that you can call or go out with.
