Yes, it’s true. There IS an ICD-10-CM code book written just for acupuncture.

People are often surprised when I tell them this. Most of the people I talk to have seen the thick, multi-colored books with teeny-tiny printing, published by a handful of publishers (hint: many of them are the same book with a different cover).

But at InstaCode Institute, we decided we would produce an ICD-10-CM book just for acupuncture, with acupuncture specific examples of using ICD-10-CM codes. Our coding book has just the codes an acupuncture practitioner will likely use – not all of the 70,000 codes, most of which they will likely never need.

Our Index and Tabular sections just have acupuncture specific codes. Since we don’t list all the ICD-10 codes, we are able to make the font larger to make it easier to read. Plus, we’ve shortened the code descriptions so that they are easier to read, and it is easy to scan a page and quickly understand the structure of the sections and codes. Also all of the highest specificity codes are printed in bold type so you can easily see which codes you would use for a claim form.

Our Tabular section also shows section and code-level alerts for age, gender, maternity and manifestation codes. This will help you avoid coding errors and denied claims. We also list an ICD-9 code with every ICD-10-CM code so you can quickly determine if the ICD-10 code you are considering is related to your old familiar ICD-9 code. We also show references to the ICD-10-CM Official Guidelines for Coding and Reporting, so you can jump from your code to the relevant section of the Guidelines.

And unlike every other ICD-10-CM book on the market, we include a Code Map in our acupuncture ICD-10 book. The Code Map section shows common ICD-9 codes used in acupuncture and maps them to related ICD-10-CM codes. This quick code conversion feature alone will save you hours of time just finding the right code. The mappings are based on Medicare’s GEMs, but enhanced by our staff of coders and billers to make them more useful and accurate.

We also include several of our exclusive Provider Documentation Guides (PDGs) in our acupuncture ICD-10-CM book. These guides are designed to help providers understand the new documentation requirements for accurate coding with ICD-10-CM. As you probably know, ICD-10 codes can be much more specific than similar ICD-9 codes are, so we need to make sure that our providers are being just as specific in their documentation.

These acupuncture PDGs are handy one-page guides to help the provider see at-a-glance the difference between the old ICD-9 code and the new ICD-10 codes. By following the PDG, the provider will include the terms and specificity needed for the coder, biller, or practice manager to pick the highest specificity ICD-10 code. These PDGs have filled such a strong need in the industry that we have also made 9 books comprised entirely of PDGs. Each book has 100 or more PDGs and they are grouped by specialties that use similar ICD codes.

And finally, one of my favorite things about our acupuncture ICD-10-CM specialty book is the wide margins on each page that are dedicated for notes. If you’ve done acupuncture coding for any length of time you probably have a bookshelf full of coding books that are dog-eared, scribbled on, and stuffed with sticky notes. I know how you are – I’m like that too. So we reserved a wide area along the edge of each page as a place for your notes. Writing notes right in your book is so much cleaner and more secure than hoping the glue on your sticky notes will hold out another few months. Ever lost a critical sticky before? Ahhhh!

I hope you get as much out of your acupuncture ICD-10-CM specialty book as I do. And remember InstaCode has books for over 30 different specialties, all just a good as the acupuncture book. Happy coding!
